Turley Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel 2013

$59.99

Very limited Turley Zinfandel.92 Points Robert Parker: "Winemaker Tegan Passalacqua’s family owns the Kirschenmann Vineyard in Lodi, and the 2013 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard (15.2% alcohol) is yet another Turley offering that wants to transport the taster to the Southern Rhône Valley of France. Yet it is more than the powers of suggestion that the aromas of raspberry, kirsch liqueur, earth, spice and pepper are all present in this wine, made from head-pruned, ungrafted vines. This is a juicy, up-front, full-bodied yet elegant Zinfandel to drink over the next 5-6 years. ."

The lightest colored Lodi Zin I've ever seen--Pretty in pink- raspberry preserve, bergamot, violets, hibiscus, Mexican chocolate on nose. Palate is just elegant, brilliant fruit but tons of floral impact, pleasant bit of cayenne spice. Opened up beautifully the second day with aromatics you could get lost in.

Kirschenmann is a new vineyard site in Turley's stable of single vineyard designate Zinfandels. Planted in 1915, the vines are seated in well-drained, silica-rich sandy soil. The 2013 is young, granted, but the potential is evident. Vibrant notes of raspberry compote, roasted black cherries, lilacs and incense float above more savory layers of roasted meat and cracked black pepper. Velvety and plush, with wonderful tension between acidity and concentration. Sample

This to me is the other face of Zinfandel, it's been tempered but not diluted, it has depth and complexity. Great black and red fruits with a earthy element not always found in California Zinfandel. The wine is rounded out with nice spice and good oak aging.

Sophisticated. As much so as a Zin can be. Bold but restrained and balanced.
