Turley Hayne Vineyard Zinfandel 2023

$95

Very limited new Turley Zin release. 97+ Points Robert Parker: "The Turley Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is the most nuanced, intricate and arguably timeless wine in the extensive Turley Zinfandel array. The nose straddles deep, powerful fruit aromas of apricot, dark berries, cranberry and pomegranate with rose petal-driven perfume. Scorched earth, tobacco leaves, licorice and forest-floor accents continuously supply ever-present complexity. The palate is lush and lacy with incredible precision and energy, fusing into an approachable, delicious fruit-driven core lined with fine, clay-textured tannins and vibrant, clarifying acidity. The finish has fantastic length and fidelity, with layers that grow ever more kaleidoscopic with time. This is a modern classic in the making and should evolve for at least two decades." California can be a logistically challenging region to cover, as many brands produce wines from appellations throughout the state. For Turley’s extensive portfolio, Sonoma County and Central Coast reviewers Erin Brooks and Matthew Luczy collaborated on scores and text to create this special co-report on the 2022 vintage. The pair tasted this prolific lineup of Zinfandels, Petite Sirahs and Cabernet Sauvignons with winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, proprietor Larry Turley and his daughter Christina Turley at the St. Helena winery. ...One of California's great wineries, Larry Turley's Turley Wine Cellars continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the Golden State's viticultural heritage, saving old, head-trained and sometimes own-rooted vineyards from destruction. With fully 29 different bottlings, Zinfandel (often complemented by small amounts of other co-planted varieties, such as Carignan and Grenache) is the standard-bearer here, though Turley also does a fantastic job with other varieties, most obviously Petite Syrah. Given how distinctive each of the single-vineyard bottlings is, it's tempting to suggest (though some will no doubt think it heretical) that Zinfandel might be the variety best adapted to expressing "terroir" in California."
