The Prisoner Wine Company Cuttings California Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2013

$54.99

Inaugural release of Cuttings from The Prisoner Wine Co. Limited. An amazing blend of Cabernet (65%), Syrah (15%), Petite Sirah (15%) and Zinfandel (5%).  It's kind of a reverse blend of original Prisoner.  The Syrah adds a rich mouth feel and silkiness to the depth of the Cabernet and the Petite brings structure and presence to the blend. The Cabernet comes from hilltop vineyards directly across from Pritchard Hill, as well as vineyards on Howell Mountain and Spring Mountain. With 20% new French and American oak, this is a very impressive wine. Brix26 Inside Scoop:  After years of amazing and envious success with their red blend, Prisoner has finally released two new wines: a red and a white! Keeping in line with their roots, they have sourced from prominent, high quality vineyards throughout California, and they are fantastic.  The 2013Cuttings combines the richness, complexity and depth of Cabernet with the structure and intensity of Petite Sirah and Syrah, all the while channeling the robust character of Zinfandel. Both the name and label were inspired by the age-old method of using cuttings from a vineyard to propagate new vines. This wine is powerful and structured, with intense aromas of ripe dark fruit, black cherry and subtle spicy notes of cedar and anise. The palate is rich and dense, with flavors of sweet plum and red berries and complimented with a hint of dark cocoa powder. Polished tannins and integrated French oak adorn a long silky finish.

It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a beautiful one from California. Dark inky in color with a short purple rim. Fruity nose of cooked blackberries, sweet cherries, figs, raisins, vanilla, cedar, licorice, chocolates, cola, mocha, coffee, peppercorn, earth, leather, tobacco and light alcohol. Delicious nose. Full bodied, big and bold, with medium acidity and long legs. Dry and extremely fruity on the palate with blackberries, cooked black cherries, raisins, vanilla, cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, mocha, coffee, peppercorn and earth. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This is a wonderful Cabernet blend. Nicely balanced with a great mouthfeel. Delicious and yummy. Good by itself or with food. Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up and shows the tannins. This 7 year old from the great 2013 vintage, still has so much fruits, that it needs another 5 years to relax. Rich, elegant and extracted. Wine Enthusiasts 92 points. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petite Sirah, Syrah and Zinfandel. 15.4% alcohol by volume. 93 points. $55.

Popped and poured; consumed over two days. Started flabby and never really turned into anything interesting. Obnoxious quantities of vanilla and confected fruit. Little else. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of these types of wines on the market right now. QPR is atrocious.

Drank over a few days - ready to go out of the bottle. Typical bold red and black fruit, full body wine, smoother tannins with some strong acidity. Not a ton of depth here but does its job well with a bone in ribeye.
