The Prisoner Wine Company Blindfold California Chardonnay Blend 2017

$29.99

The new Prisoner white wine!  A delicious white blend that will be here for a short time only. Blindfold is the delicious new white wine blend from The Prisoner Wine Company. It has a California appellation with fruit sourced from the Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Paso Robles and Santa Ynez. The blend is unique; using primarily Chardonnay (35%) and classic Rhone whites, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, with a small percentage of Riesling and Semillon to bring out the aromatics. The wine has beautiful aromas of tropical fruit, baked apple and pear, incredible richness while maintaining acidity and freshness.   Robert Parker:  "A blend of 30% Chardonnay, 20% Viognier, 20% Roussanne and the balance Grenache Blanc, Chenin Blanc and a few other grapes, the 2013 Proprietary White Blindfold is close in quality to the brilliant 2012 I reviewed last year. Reminiscent of some of Sine Qua Non’s white wines from California’s Central Coast, the 2013 is more zesty, and plays it closer to the vest, but it offers lovely notes of fresh pineapple, tangerine skins, orange marmalade, melon and honeysuckle. I wish more California wineries would consider using such innovative blends as this given the high quality that can result. This beauty should be enjoyed over the next several years....This brand was first created by Orin Swift, but is now run by winemaker Jen Beloz and David Phinney. The wines’ impressive labels reflect the innovative and creative nature of this wine company."

Deep gold with white-yellow highlights. Sauternes-like nose of honey and magnolia blossom. Full-bodied palate yields the same honey and magnolia adding navel orange, lemon rind, white peach, and almond. Medium minus acidity. Medium finish. This big white blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and white Rhône varieties is too heavy for a refreshing sipper, but a good pair for rich white wine fare like scallops, lobster Thermidor, or fruited salmon. Drink now.

The 17’ seems to have high percentage of Chard (I believe it’s normally around 30-35%) than the previous vintages I tasted. Stone fruits dominants the fruit profile and it feels more buttery, though aromatics and texture still shows some characters of the Rhone varieties. Quite nice still.

It's a blend, but Chardonnay is definitely dominant. Nice acidity and minerality up front, with a long structured finish of pear and spiced baked apple. Prominent oak and some nuttiness. Good with roasted chicken and welcoming Fall, but don't serve too cold. The 2017 vintage doesn't disappoint.

A generous non-wine friend opened this for my curiosity. What a miserable mess of RS and awful synthetics.
