Made from the younger vines of Harlan Estate, BOND, and Promontory, The Mascot shares a unique glimpse into the evolution of our winegrowing estates. The Mascot began early on as an experiment, after talking the family and winemaking team into sparing a few barrels of wine - produced from our younger vines - to explore a blend of my own. In the first few years, before it had a label or a name, it was just a wine shared with friends and family. It wasn’t until the 2008 vintage, our first official release, that we had enough to share with new friends. The Mascot is one of the newer wine labels from the famed Harlan family, but this time...it's the younger Will Harlan! Although Will Harlan grew up running around the winery, hand-turning de-stemmers, and eating grapes off the vines in his family's backyard, he never quite thought he'd become a winemaker. So after the 2018 of a couple of weeks ago which needs a couple of years to come together, this is just entering it's drinking window. Still a big, structured young-ish wine but very drinkable with a decant. This oozes dark fruit, graphite, earth and chocolate. Very pretty aromatics and matching fruit on the palate. I found 2018 much more singular/monolithic. This has much more going on. Grippy and dry but I sense a bit of sweetness from aging already. I like the sweet components more than the drying tannins so I will bury my other bottles of both vintages for a couple of years. Edit: on day two this evolved into a compact spice bomb, very impressive 97-99 in a few years.

Great wine. Dark color. Bright blurry crisp. Silky tannins and drinking really well now. Really enjoyed this. Better than the ‘14 as I recall.

First bottle of the 2016. Almost black. On the open a bit tight, but clearly perfectly ripe dark fruit - blackberry, plum. Graphite, minerality. Beautiful structure, well balanced. Opens up very nicely over a couple hours. Solid wine.

Starting the holiday party off big. Excellent. Earthy cab. Well balanced. Probably could use time in decanter, but happy to have a try.
