Textbook (Jonathan & Susan Pey) "La Poussière" Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

$39.99

Textbook's 2012 "La Poussiere" Cabernet is a small-production discovery from the heart of Napa Valley's Rutherford District.  Beautiful Cab for a reasonable price - try it while its still available. The Rutherford District is the heart of Napa Valley and renown for its very finest Cabernet Sauvignon. And for good reason. Its gravelly soils, warm days and cool nights give this Bordeaux variety everything it needs to reach perfection. The Textbook "La Poussiere" Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in the east side of appellation in very gravelly, nutrient poor soils. Gnarled thirty year-old heritage vines and low yields, combined with 22 months of maturation in new French oak have delivered a textbook Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, rich and complex, it will continue to improve in bottle for several years. Only 9 barrels made.

Wow. Big improvement over two years ago. Very elegant. A real winner.

I was disappointed when I first opened this a couple of years ago. Fast forward to now and it's a different wine. Lovely bouquet of vanilla and sandalwood, with fruit from start to finish on the palate. Vibrant and enjoyable. I guess RP was right all along.

With all the talk tonight on DL from @"Odedi" and @Jody Scharf, I thought it might be fun to bring out this cuvée. Intensely dark in the glass, the nose is somewhat closed. On the palate, the tannins dominate and this is the opposite of a "fruit forward" wine. There are notes of currant and underripe raspberry. I think, given the tannins, this is a wine for the long term. I will hold off for a while with the rest i have.

I didn't decant this long enough. Great body, smooth, long finish. No bouquet initially, but started to develop a nice one right as the bottle was being finished.

Great juice. But needs a few years laying down.
