Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2017

$284.99

New release - 97 Points                                       New release of Sassicaia, the greatest Super-Tuscan from Italy.  Limited. Sassicaia is the most iconic wine made in Italy today.  It is the most collected Italian wine in the world and arguably could be the most famous wine in your cellar. This is the wine that all other Super Tuscans are based on and compared to and that made Bolgheri, on the coast of Tuscany, one of the most famous wine regions in the world today.  Sassicaia 2011, a blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, comes from the region's best vintage in years.  Perhaps Italy's greatest wine, order the classic new vintage while we have it available. 97 Points Wine Enthusiast "Cellar Selection": "Aromas of exotic spice, baked plum and French oak mingle with camphor and blue flower on the nose. This boasts extraordi-nary elegance and freshness despite the hot vin-tage, delivering flavors of juicy Marasca cherry, spiced blueberry, tobacco and licorice. Velvety, fine-grained tannins provide support while coffee and crushed mint linger on the finish." 96 Points James Suckling: "This shows focus and finesse with dark berries, currants and a light rosemary character. Full-bodied, refined and focused. Serious." 96 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2017 Sassicaia is dark, sensual and rich, which is a good thing, as the tannins - the result of a warm, dry year in which phenolic ripening was difficult to fully reach - are also quite powerful. I tasted the 2017 from an approximate blend from barrel, where the wines are still aging in separate lots. It will be interesting to see where things end up once the wine is in bottle."

A library photo used for the 5th wine at the Downs Club Super Tuscan Dinner. We had the 2017 - no detailed notes but unsurprisingly the WOTN. Beautiful perfume showing Roses and Cigar box - could be picked as Bordeaux in a blind tasting. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc. A medium to full bodied palate.

what a phenomenal job the crew did with what Mother Nature threw them ~ this is an elegant & approachable example of Sassicaia ~ upon pulling the cork Mediterranean scrub & herbs fill the nose and flavors of red licorice and Razzles pop on the palate ~ in time the red fruits become less candied and the the scrub & herbs, along w tobacco leaf & hints of gravel, finish the flavor ~ though a samurai sword of acidity slices through! If you’re looking for breadth this doesn’t have it ~ but what is there is focused and sings!

The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2021)

#overrated tasted it blind with 3 other #supertuscan wines ranging from 40€, 75€ and these and #ornellaia (the best). all the other 3 were better. This was light intensity aromas on the nose, it really the least aromatic and then on the palate it was acidic just a little disjointed and unbalanced.

Wine world seems to love this wine. On one hand, it’s brilliant, but for me, a little too much going on. Cortona tasting…

Simply Incredible! Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%). Dark, sensual and brooding. Aromas of cooked plums, exotic spices, menthol and blue flowers. Juicy ripe cherry, blueberry, tobacco, mineral and black licorice flavors. Velvety texture. Soft tannins with a long and lingering finish. Impeccable balance. WOW!

2017 tasted in 2021. Without decanting it’s too young and strong oak flavour. After decanting the potential of this wine is enormous. Blackberry, Cherry, cinnamon on top of young oak flavour just gorgeous. Perhaps I had to keep this for another 5 years or so to open the full potential

Deep ruby coloration. On the nose, plum, cherry, currant, intense spice and what hints of barbecue. On the palate, blueberry, cherry, plum and currants; surprising acidity for a 2017; nice earthiness with hints of minerals and tobacco and spice which carry on through a long finish with vanilla and cherry and mint. Very long finish. Tannins are still strong but well balanced. Full body with a rich mouthfeel.
