Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

98 Points - rare Magnum *This is a Magnum (1.5L) of Ornellai 2016 - limited*                                                             98 points Robert Parker: ": "Now we're talking. Tasted from barrel, the 2016 Bolgheri SuperioreOrnellaia will be released in May 2019. This is a luxuriant wine with profuse abundance and beaming optimism. Both the 2015 and 2016 vintages are distinguished by the supple sweetness of the tannins, but the 2016 edition has just a hair more acidity. You don't necessarily taste that freshness, but it does contribute to the linearity and the framework of the wine. This is an iconic vintage for Bolgheri. The summer was dry and warm, and temperatures cooled down at harvest leading to optimal sugar and phenolic ripeness. The next vintage, 2017, threw many more curve balls and had vintners scrambling to achieve quality by resorting to severe fruit selection and low yields. This wine is generous and thickly layered. It delivers the most beautiful sensations ofSoftness, Succulence and Structure. The balance between those three S's is Sublime." 98 Points James Suckling: "Such balance and finesse with power to this wine. Shows dried flowers, currants and minerals. Full body and firm and silk tannins. Love the texture. Umami character everywhere. Goes on for minutes." 98 + Points Jeb Dunnuck: "From a great vintage for Bolgheri, the 2016 Ornellaia is a classic blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot that was aged 20 months in 70% new French oak. Its saturated purple color is followed by a deep, beautifully concentrated yet primordial effort that offers serious intensity in its cassis, black cherry, graphite, bay leaf, forest floor, and spring flower aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and multi-dimensional on the palate, it has thrilling purity of fruit, ample tannins, and a great, great finish. This is a tour de force in red wine that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades. " 98 points Decanter Magazine: "2016 is one of the best vintages ever in Bolgheri, classic in style and balanced. It has a 'great sense of the classics without denying the past, a fully-fledged, more modern wine,' according to Axel Heinz. Crimson and dense in color, it's full of restrained, brambly fresh fruit, clove, nutmeg and a salty butteriness, combined with velvety, masked tannins on the palate. It is at perfect phenolic ripeness, supported by refreshing natural acidity balancing the 14.5% alcohol. This will last for decades. Drinking Window 2019 – 2045"

Deep ruby coloration. No translucency. On the nose, cherry, currant, ripe plum, toasted oak, vanilla, and florals. On the palate, plum, cherry, tobacco, warm spices, long finish of tobacco and spice with oak. Tannins still strong but not overpowering. After breathing for a while the nose shows notes of blackberry and vanilla. The palate shows more fruit and jamminess and fullness. Some chocolate developing in the finish.

I have a hit and miss track record with Ornellaia. Not sure if it’s the % of Cab Franc that gets me - I don’t care for many Bordeaux blends when it surpasses 15%. But this youthful Italian blend despite its high CF % hit the spot with every glass. Robust and wide and blended beautifully. A treasure now that will be even better in another five years.

One of my top 3 Italian wines. Deep ruby color and cigar box and leather undertones. Long finish and tastes better the longer it aerates.

Perfection! Dry, delicate and well structured tannins with balanced acidity. Notes of blackberry, dried herbs, and cedar, with a lingering cherry finish. After decant, some milk chocolate and dried fig. Special.

Great Wines of Italy SFO. The official 2019 guidebook online at www.jamessuckling.com/event/great-wines-italy-usa-2019-guidebook . Not rating since I’m using one glass and most of these wines were only open for a little bit before tasting. Super fun night.
