Tensley Santa Barbara County Syrah 2014

$25.99

A blockbuster new Syrah from Joe Tensley, one of the Santa Barbara region's leading Syrah producers. Try this gem before it's gone.previous vintage 93 Points Robert Parker:  "Starting off the 2013s and the first vintage, the 2013 Syrah Tensley Vineyard comes from the newly planted (4th leaf fruit) vineyard planted around Tensley’s house. Showing notions of smoked beef, leather and licorice to go with a core of plum and currant fruit, this full-bodied, deep and textured effort will drink nicely on release and over the following 5-7 years, possibly longer."

Holy fruit, Batman! All the black and blue fruit, licorice, spice you could cram in a bottle. Weighty, viscous and big, but pretty well balanced for its scale. Nice example of the style.

Full throttle SBC Syrah, with enough acidity to keep it from being flat or flabby. Big, juicy, liquid black fruit.

I’ve always been a fan of Tensley, especially their Colson Canyon, as well the other projects that Joey is involved in... that said, this wine is flawed. The volatile acidity is just too much. At times it’s fleeting only to be on blast in the next sip. Not sure if it’s uniform, but I suspect it would also cause a fair amount of bottle variation, so I’ll be trying this again.

When I last had this 3 months ago, I described it as a fruit bomb with very faint effervescence. I said it would do well with a good food pairing. I'm pleased to report that, indeed, a hearty beef stew with all its unctuous qualities derived from layers and layers of flavors, went quite well. The note itself remains unchanged.

Blackberry jam. Flashbacks to my first trimester when all I could eat was toast and jam for weeks. This is a crazy juicy wine, gotta have some residual sugar but it is balanced by nice acidity.

I'm not sure what to make of this wine. Very clearly it is sweet and sparkly. There is an obvious effervescence. Strawberry immediately comes to mind. Maybe some blackberry. In one hand, it's completely unidimensional and flat. On the other, it's quite reasonable to drink on a Monday. I think if you pair this correctly, it can be quite enjoyable.

A bit closed with sour cherry notes on the finish.
