Tensley Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah 2018

$42

98 Points - limited                                           A blockbuster new Syrah from Joe Tensley, one of the Santa Barbara region's leading Syrah producers. Try this gem before it's gone. 98 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The deepest colored Syrah in the lineup, the 2018 Syrah Colson Canyon comes from a great vineyard located in the hills above the town of Los Olivos. Awesome notes of blackberries, toasted spice (there's some new oak in this wine), ground herbs, peppered meat, and earth all flow to a full-bodied, concentrated, deep, layered wine that has plenty of tannins, good acidity, and a huge finish. It's a magical Syrah from Tensely, and my money is on it being the finest to date." 94 Points Robert Parker:  "Opaque purple-black, the finished barrel sample of 2018 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is still quite primary on the nose, showing glimpses of warm black and blue fruits, coffee, prosciutto, sage and chocolate. Full-bodied, rich and intense in the mouth, it's youthfully wound with firm, grainy tannins and good freshness, finishing long." Winery Notes:  As many of our customers know, this year a long-held dream came true for us when we bought Colson Canyon Vineyard. Colson has been part of the Tensley line-up since 2000 and has been a real star for us, making Food and Wine’s Top Ten Syrah’s in America as well as twice making The Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list. This rugged vineyard always delivers some of darkest, most extracted wines we produce. After three years of drought, the 2015 vintage gave us that big extraction and then some.   Look for notes of black plums and blackberries as well as vanilla, black and white pepper and smoked meats. This Colson is drinking well now but will continue to age nicely over the next 10 to 12 years.

Sweet and concentrated. Really wonderful syrah character with pipe tobacco, amaretto and cherry cobbler. Only complaint is this is not very refreshing. Very extracted and a mouth stainer.

A wine of immense pedigree and stature, the 2018 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard captures the essence of Joey Tensley's style. Soaring aromatics, dense fruit and beams of tannin shape a Syrah of intense richness and savory depth. The Colson Canyon Syrah is a wine of tremendous dimension that gets better and better with time in the glass. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, iron and bright red fruit build into the palate-staining finish. All I can say is: Wow!! (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2020)

To much FOMO from looking at @Paul T- Huntington Beach ‘s Korean short rib posts so had to order my own. To young, but the wine will be an absolute rockstar in a few years.

Inky deep purple in color with a nose of blackberries, black plums, peppered meat, and a hint of lavender. Full-bodied with good fruit up front with firm acidity and great balance. The finish lingers nicely.

Very rich, ripe, sweet fruit. A little bit of bacon on the nose. Needs the wiry, dry tannins that come around on the mid palate and balance out the finish. Nice lingering blueberry-beef jerky thing.
