100 points - limited Limited new Syrah from cult producer Sine Qua Non. 97-100 Points Robert Parker: This wine will be bottled in August this year. Made exclusively from estate-grown fruit, the 2017 Syrah “No Name As Of Yet” is composed of 82.4% Syrah, 5.2% Mourvèdre, 7.8% Petite Sirah, 2% Grenache, 1.2% Petit Manseng and 1.4% Viognier that was fermented with 26% whole cluster. The vineyard sources are 32% Eleven Confessions, 41% The Third Twin, 25% Cumulus and 2% Molly Aida. It is to be aged for around 23 months in French oak, 59% new." 98-100 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 The Hated Hunter Syrah looks to be another magical wine from this estate, which has produced an incredible number of truly profound wines over the coming 10-15 years. Made from 82.4% Syrah, 7.8% Petite Sirah, and the rest Mourvèdre, Grenache, Viognier, and Petit Manseng, it will spend 23 months or so in 59% new French oak. My notes are sprinkled with a few expletives, but it does everything right, offering incredible purity of fruit, notes of white flowers, cured meats, spice box, and blackcurrants, full-bodied richness, and a seamless texture. It shows the pretty, perfumed, ripe style of the vintage yet is flawlessly balanced. The 2017s have a touch of the 2015 structure and austerity, so plan on 4-5 years of bottle age." "There are few greater success stories in wine than that of Sine Qua Non’s Manfred Krankl. Austrian-born and showing up penniless in Los Angeles in 1980, he went on to create one of the greatest wine estates in the world today by sheer talent and work ethic."

2017 vintage. Open (not decanted) for an hour before tasting. Massive body. Blackish color. 15.9% abv. Nose comes across as hot and salty with roasted nuts. Flavors come across as multiple, ripe, dark fruits with the aforementioned chocolate espresso note. Big, kicking spice components grabbing the upper corners of the mouth behind the molars along with the front third of the tongue and giving them all a good howdoyoudo. No shrinking violet and waay too early to be tasting this. Still...fantastic. 7.5.23.

1.5 hour decant(lots of fine/cloudy sediment). A fabulous inky dark purplish garnet color. On the nose: red/black fruit, vanilla, floral, charcoal, and smokey sweet cedar. Taste: smooth, rich, dense wine with brambly blackberry, licorice, iron, pepper, and a chocolate espresso long finish. YUM! though needs more time or a longer decant to really strut its stuff.

While I normally love Sine aqua Non wines, this one felt a little disjointed. Maybe it needs more time. Yes, it’s a really well made wine, but just not shining like it should. However, it’s always a treat to try these, but this one failed to meet expectations.

Sine Qua Non vs Schrader cage fight tonight. +4 hour decant (some fine cloudy sediment). A remarkable dark purplish garnet color. On the nose: red and black fruit, stewed meat, sandalwood, pepper, bacon, charcoal. Taste: a smooth, rich, soft, powerful wine with dark cherry, licorice, smoke, leather, pepper and a long dark chocolate espresso finish. YUM! It has everything you want. Its young(probably a better score if I have patience), but so good I might pop another bottle tomorrow. Cheers!
