Limited new release from cult winery Sine Qua Non.99 Points Robert Parker: "A prodigious effort that possesses overflowing richness and depth, the 2008 Syrah The Duel (88% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 6% Viognier, all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard) delivers an off-the-hook drinking experience with decadent cassis, blackberry, smoked meats, crushed flowers and hints of spice all soaring from the glass. A full-bodied, unctuous Syrah that stays fresh and elegant, with vibrant acidity, it needs a solid decant if drinking anytime soon and will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Drink now-2028... ...About as good as it gets across the board, these singular, incredible wines are the result of an obsessive attention to detail at all stages of the wine making process. There is no secret or hidden magic going on here. The incredibly talented and down-to-earth Manfred Krankl simply walks the walk as opposed to only talking about attention to detail or offering up the standard, wine is made in the vineyard comments. It is fascinating to taste the 2008 Syrah Estate The Duel next to the Grenache The Duel. Endless layers of seamless fruit are woven together in this utterly impeccable, full-bodied wine. The 2008 boasts dazzling richness and sheer power. It is pretty clear that in 2008 the Syrah did better than the Grenache with extended time in barrel. Violets, mint, tar and licorice flesh out on the huge, explosive finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2008 develops. Today, it is pretty special. The 2008 is 88% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 6% Viognier, all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard. A small portion of the Syrah was vinified with whole clusters. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

2008 is finally ready. A bit of sediment at the end which indicates drink sooner than later to enjoy the massive fruit.

Absolutely stunning nose of barbecued meat, dar sour fruits, kirsch, violets, and pencil lead. Initially very focused on the palate, but then expanded to reveal additional layers of flavored that echoed (in a subdued way) the nose. Graceful finish goes on forever. Powerful elegance, Manfred’s signature call. This one is probably still too young...but it’s awesome nonetheless.
