Shafer Vineyards Relentless Napa Valley Syrah Petite Sirah 2013

$124.99

Limited new Cabernet Sauvignon release from Shafer! 98-100 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five has a dense ruby/purple color and is a blend of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in 100% new French oak. This is always a beautifully elegant wine from Shafer, and the 2013 is no exception. Blueberry, black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with crushed rock and spring flowers are present in this medium-bodied, stylish and elegant wine. Tannins are soft, the wine pure and ideal for drinking now and over the next 12-15 years..." ....Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of Stags Leap of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity. Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfect as can be. They have kept their feet, heads and egos grounded, and continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage. They made some of the very finest, possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013, they have crafted one profound wine after another."

It’s so rich and layered it’s like a dessert you never want to end. It’s got some dark fruit you and could probably age 100 yrs and still be layered and rich. The color was like a dark purple and bright around the edges like St Macairre. Really one of the best wines. Thanks Elise and David for making this happen.

In 1979 John Shafer founded Shafer Vineyards in the Stags Leap District of Napa. A blend of 97% Syrah & 3% Petite Sirah, notably small PS% which varies each year. The work of Elias Fernandez, fruit from La Mesa Vineyard, a ridgetop of shallow soils & volcanic ash. Stunning red with full black fruit aromas and pepper spice with floral edge. On the palate blackberry flavors, spice, oak and earthy notes. Big fine tannins, vivid acidity, good balance on lingering finish ending with cacao tones. Will cellar well.

Visually, this is as dark as the night is black. The perfume is equally intense with mulberries, brambles, blackberries and kirsch. The palette is perfectly delineated with black cherries, black olives, a hint of cloves and anise. Absent is the peppery signature that typically comes along for the ride. It is seamlessly woven, with polished tannins that are already well integrated. 15.8% abv which is not apparent at all. This is a top-shelf syrah that should not be missed. No cash-box aesthetics here, just exceptional winemaking and a sense of place. Remarkable.

Tried it right after the one point five and I'm floored. A wine of tremendous quality. Full structure with Napa fruit. Beast doesn't even do it justice.

The wine needs a hard splash decant or a couple hours of air to show its purity. The least petite sirah ever in a relentless and I'm digging the style more

Inky black, plums and graphite. Opening up very nicely, incredibly flavorful with a long lingering finish.

Wow, smokey, dark fruit and syrah to the bone. Tobacco, black cherry, overripe red apple peel, and graphite on the nose. Quite high alcohol on the palate, so the 15.8% shines through.

Deep and dense crimson; purplish rim. Initial nuanced nose of toasted oak, scorched earth and leather; yielding to plums, berries, yogurt and mint. Quite full body, weighty on the palate. Feels surprisingly powerful, especially after the elegant bouquet. Tannins starting to integrate. There's some spiciness to the taste and also some minerality. I'm loving all these wonderful contradictory sensations on the palate. Long finish. This is 15.8% ABV, but does not feel like that at all. Already quite enjoyable now, but could be even more exciting with another 2-3 years of cellaring. 93-94, with a potential to break 95 in the future.

Always a personal favorite. Tar, coconut, blackberry and cocoa powder. Massive wine, but graceful power with still teeth tingling tannins. Almost like a tannat chew. Only had one of these. Will be hunting up another one if I can find another ‘13.
