Shafer Vineyards One Point Five Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

$94.95

95 points - new release                                       Limited new Cabernet Sauvignon release from Shafer! 95 Points James Suckling: "This shows nice concentration on the nose in terms of ash and blackcurrant but also some pretty floral elements with violets and jasmine. Full-bodied with a strong entrée of black fruit but with driven acidity, muscular tannins and a long finish. A blend of 95% cabernet sauvignon, 3% merlot, 1% malbec and 1% petit verdot. Drink in 2019." 93 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a fabulous example of the year at its best. Super-ripe red cherry, pomegranate, mint, rose petal and spice infuse this voluptuous, racy Cabernet Sauvignon. Readers looking for a wine to drink with minimal cellaring will find much to admire in this sexy, racy Cabernet. Even with all of its up-front fruit, the 2015 has quite a bit of depth and tannin to support at least a handful of years of fine drinking.." 92 Points Wine Spectator: "Strikingly complex and engaging, offering tiers of flavor, including dark berry, cedar, graphite and oak, presented in a style that lets the elements speak through the tannins. Drink now through 2030. 9,000 cases made." Robert Parker: "...the Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is, for my money, is one of the best wines in Napa Valley in its price range...Year in year out, this is one of the superstar wineries, not only in Napa Valley and all of California, but in the entire world. It’s the product of visionary John Shafer, who started in 1978 after a successful corporate career. He had the foresight and visionary genius to believe in the microclimates and soils of Stags Leap of the southern Napa Valley. When his son Doug came on board with their brilliant winemaker and Mr. Everything, Elias Fernandez, things soared in quality and diversity. Today, this is a winery that does everything about as perfect as can be. They have kept their feet, heads and egos grounded, and continue to kick proverbial ass with every vintage. They made some of the very finest, possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013, they have crafted one profound wine after another."

The small winery is managed by father/son team John & Doug Shafer. A blend of 90% Cab Sauv, 7% Merlot & 3% Malbec, aged, 20 months, 100% new French oak. Beautiful fruit & floral aromas with hints of savory spice. On the palate cherry & raspberry flavors with a tight oak structure adding pepper, licorice & dusty cacao. Firm tight tannins, needs decanting now, lingering ending with fruit & slight mineral edge. Good now but 5 years of cellar rest with make wine pop! Had this with a Holiday Filet Mignon. Nice!

When Friday night starts right. Patio, Shake Shake, and a nice Cab. Deep dark color. Nice complexity. Expressive nose. Blue and black fruit, and a little cinnamon. Plush mouthfeel. Lengthy finish. No complaints here.

Color of dark ruby-purple, with a nose of blackberry jam, vanilla, and sawdust. Full-bodied with amazing balance. Nice smooth finish. Tannins are there, and grippy. This is a really nice wine. With the tannin structure and fruit in place, I could see this aging for years to come.

Six hours without rain? Taking advantage with a fire and good company. This is drinking beautifully for its young age - cherry and spice; well-rounded and integrated now. Increasingly pleased with this second-tier offering.

Decanted for a good 2hrs and that helped smooth things out. Powerful and brooding with just a touch of heat. May want to revision 5yrs to see if it’s become better integrated. Fun components, just not all in full harmony just yet.
