Seghesio Family Vineyards Sonoma County Zinfandel 2013

$23.99

Always one of the favorite California Zins we carry. 93 Points Wine Enthusiast: "You could use this as a teaching tool for classic Sonoma County Zinfandel. It's full-bodied, dry and spicy, with briary flavors of wild berries, mocha, tobacco, leather and exotic spices. More importantly, it's absolutely delicious. The grapes come from Seghesio's best vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. An astonishing value."

Seghesio us probably my favorite zinfandel producer but this is their bare bones basic version. Still loaded with sour cherry and raspberry notes and extremely drinkable, but their Cortina vineyard, Rockpile and Home Ranch provide better expressions for just a little more.

Much better the second night. First night, it came across very much like a simple zin fruit bomb. Second night, it evened out a bit. Midpalate is a touch hollow. I'm sorry, Mendo producers like Graziano, Steele, and others truly do the best Zin in California. This is a nice wine, but I just haven't found a single producer outside of Mendocino that can stack up quality and price wise to the mendo crew. pH is just a bit too high. It muddies the palate towards that nearly overly fruit forward posture. Closed aromatics, unfortunately. I enjoy the wine, just the slightest bit lacking for the 25 dollars.

Thought I would try this given 2010 vintage was rock star. Nose is nice... Toasted bread? Gives way to classic zinfandel. Not as good as predecessor but worthy of a weekend meal.

Purple in color with a wide purplish rim. Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, sweet strawberries, plums, wood, licorice, spices, dark chocolates, earth, pencil lead, peppercorn and tobacco. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Smooth with long legs. Dry on the palate, and fruity with blueberries, cherries, plums, oak, vanilla, spices, licorice, earth, meats, green vegetables, herbs, chocolates and peppercorn. Nice length on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries. What a great Zinfandel from Sonoma County, California. Getting into the drinking range now. Well balanced with nice complexity and interesting acidity. Good as a sipping wine, all by itself or with food. Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (1 hour). This is not the jammy Californian Zinfandel one might be used to. Spicy and interesting. I really enjoyed it this time. This 4 year old is drinking very nicely now. I had this vintage a couple of years ago, and it was not very enjoyable. What a difference a couple of years in the bottle has done... Could use a few more years to become even better. Wine Spectator 92 points. 14.8% alcohol by volume.

Classic. Strawberry jam, vanilla, toast and baking spices. More licorice and white pepper on the palate. Big body and long finish.

Pick up the white pepper on the nose at first, ripe black cherry, red cherry, blueberry, plum, vanilla, nutmeg come through, red/ purple flower bouquet following up. Fruity, a bit spicy, beautiful oak flavor, full body wine. High alcohol warm up the throat and stomach. Beautiful Zinfandel.
