Seavey Vineyard Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$79.99

92 Points - great buy                                    Robert Parker has called Caravina, "perhaps the best second wine in all of Napa Valley", and we agree.  One of the best Cabs under $60 we've found.  2013 marks Seavey Vineyard’s 16th vintage of estate-produced Caravina Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a unique tapestry of steep hillside blocks all from the estate vineyard.  Warm aromas from a dark fruit galette of plum and blackberry, gently wrapped in a waft of rose petals, resonate in the mouth. Neither opulent nor heavy, but revealing lively concentration and intensity, this wine exemplifies the savoriness of this unique growing season—a special profile that is unlikely to be repeated. The texture of this wine is soft, with an intriguing long-lived finish that reveals this wine’s subtle complexity and harmony. This wine is ideal for drinking now or over the next 5-10 years. 95+ Points Robert Parker: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is 97.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2.5% Petit Verdot aged 20 months in new French oak and is typically young, backward and for serious connoisseurs to stow away for at least 5-8 years prior to consumption. The 2013 is typically coiled, deep purple in color, with notes of burning embers, créme de cassis, a touch of earth, spice and tobacco leaf. It is full-bodied, moderately tannic and needs to be respected in terms of it not providing a whole lot of pleasure for another 5-8 years....This estate, tucked away in Conn Valley behind the famous Meadowood Resort, still remains somewhat under-the-radar. Big, rich, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignons have been produced at Seavey since the early 1990s. French consultant Philippe Melka has done a fabulous job getting the tannins under control, and since he has been in charge, the wines are consistently brilliant."

Ordered BTG at Mustards, but served way too warm be drinkable. That's a pic of how much was left at the end of dinner. Will never understand how restaurateurs can be so careless with their highest margin product. This should not happen anywhere, but in a top restaurant in a world class wine region it is inexcusable, not mention totally disrespectful of both the customer and estate that made the wine. Food and service were terrific, as usual.

Pulled this one for “Thirsty Thursday” WebEx social time with a few friends. Beautiful Napa Cab that didn’t disappoint. Second wine with great QPR. Dark fruit. Smooth tannins. Bright acidity. Really opened up nicely after an hour in the decanter. I need to find more of this one.

Day one I was not excited, but by day 2 this one was shining. Dark ruby red. Dark fruit, licorice, anise, a hint of minerals. Nicely balanced. Grippy tannins. I believe a little more time will do wonders for this beauty.

Fruit forward. Less well rounded than their first wine, but decent value.
