Sean Thackrey Orion Rossi Vineyard Red Blend 2013

$84.99

New release of Sean Thackrey's sough-after Orion. Limited. From enigmatic producer Sean Thackrey, comes another of his highly-allocated wines, this time a Rhône-style blend.  This bottle is truly sublime.  Like no other wine that we've tasted before.  The fruit gets bigger with each sip, one jammy mouthful after another.  Think Châteauneuf-du-Pape California-style.  Always quick to sell out, the previous vintage received 95 points from Robert Parker, who wrote: "Marching to the beat of a drummer largely unknown to any other winemaker in California, Sean Thackerey continues to produce some extraordinary wines, in this case from a field blend planted in 1905. This is clearly a Rhône Ranger blend, with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of incense, camphor, blue and black fruits, earth, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and bursting with personality, the wine is unique/singular, with an intensity that has to be tasted to be believed. Drink it over the next decade or more."

Super extracted. Inky, black even. That being said it's actually quite nice, so long as you ignore that it's a Pinot Noir.

Made by Sean Thackery with grapes grown in a single vineyard; what they all are remains unclear, but there is definitely some syrah in this which provides backbone, petite sirah which stains the glass and zinfandel to provide jammy qualities. It's an opulent blend, for sure. At 15.7% ABV you'd think this would burn going down, but it actually is a very well rounded and well made wine. The alcohol doesn't burn, the tannins aren't grippy, and the acidity is moderate. It's an event wine if there ever was one.

The always enigmatic Sean Thackrey. From centenarian vines come a massive wine of impressive complexity. At least as savory as it is fruity, my first thought was "fennel sausage!" Fun now but should age like a top Châteauneuf. #swc
