Scarecrow Monsieur Ètain Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

$175

Rare new release from cult winery Scarecrow. Limited. previous vintage 95 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2013 M. Etain Cabernet Sauvignon, which is hardly a second wine by any means, offers beautiful blackcurrant fruit with some cedar wood/sandalwood notes, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and that layered texture that is so enticing. The wine has a beautiful opaque purple color, hints of graphite, blueberry and blackberry fruit, a touch of licorice and the soil undertones that some would say are part of the so-called "Rutherford dust" scenario, although that's debatable. This wine has the sweetness and opulence to be drunk young, but won't hit its prime for at least another 5-8 years and keep for 20-30."

This was just spectacular from pop and pour! Gorgeous royal purple in the glass but not an overly dark core. Totally seductive aromatics...spiced potpourri, fresh squeezed blue and black fruits, cinnamon and Mexican vanilla. Elixir like on the palate showing sweet smoke, licorice, graphite, creme de cassis and ripe dark fruits. The flavor profile here reminds me of Bevan, but there is a nimble/lifted body to this that makes it lighter than expected (in a great way). Zero problems enjoying these young!

The 2014 is absolutely gorgeous right now with some air time. Dense black fruit, smoked molasses, perfectly ripe berries, crushed velvet. The plastic cups double as stemware and decanters.

A textural treat. This and Buccella are some of the best textural wines on the market. Massive tannins yet they are fine and round. Dark berry compote, cocoa, plum, mild licorice, graphite. A baby waiting to be born. Too bad most will drink this way too young because it delivers oodles immediately after popping the cork.

14.9% alc. Surprisingly structured and tannic for coming from Celia's hands. This should be singing in 5+ years.

Third night on the Allure of the Seas and back at Chops Grille. Third wine out of the case we brought on board. Purplish ruby red. Layered and rich nose with notes of boysenberries, dark cinnamon, purple petals, more dark berries and vanilla. Solid acidity paired with heavy tannins (7.5/10 almost 8). Full bodied with a touch of heat. Lots of complexity on the palate with rich and dark layers of sweet spices, blackberries, and gunpowder. Strong structure and long finish. Will easily last two decades. Drink till 2037.
