Saxum Vineyards Paderewski Vineyard Zinfandel Blend 2017

$169.99

96 Points - limited            The Paderewski Vineyard is lovely, revealing complex aromas of ripe black fruits, licorice, aromatic bark, candied peel and dried flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and savory, with rich structuring tannins, excellent energy and concentration and a long, stony finish. It's a blend of 46% Mataro, 19% Syrah, 15% Tempranillo, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Zinfandel and 5% Grenache, maturing in 16% new puncheons, 67% foudre and the balance in used wood. The 2016 will be bottled this June.... ...Needing no introduction for anyone that’s followed the Wine Advocate or the wine scene in Paso Robles for any time in the past decade, Heather and Justin Smith’s Saxum Vineyards continues to fashion sensational, world-class wines from a number of top sites on the west side of Paso Robles."

Mostly a blend of syrah and mouvedre. A big wine… even for Saxum.

At 16.1% you would blown away not realizing it. There is a defined Paso stamp. Raisin , syrup, on the nose. Baking spices , nutmeg, toasted almond , and slight hints of eucalyptus permeate. Just a slight hint of acidity. Very balanced Paso.

Let this baby air out a good 10 hours before diving in. The usual black and red fruits, cooking spices, and more Zin / northern Rhône than others from Justin’s lineup. Delightful as always!
