Saxum Vineyards G2 Vineyard Mourvèdre-Grenache Blend 2017

$159.99

Rare new release from cult producer Saxum. 94 Points Robert Parker:  "The 2017 G2 Vineyard is made up of 58% Grenache, 20% Mataro, 11% Tannat, 8% Graciano and 3% Syrah. It was made with 14% whole cluster and aged 21 months in 87% new oak. Medium to deep ruby, it has lovely scents of tar and roses to begin, with a core of ripe red and black cherries and berries and accents of turned earth, forest floor, underbrush, dried herbs and garrigue. The medium to full-bodied palate is intense, layered and earthy, with a firm, grainy frame and well-woven freshness, finishing long and layered. 944 cases were made." ...Needing no introduction for anyone that’s followed the Wine Advocate or the wine scene in Paso Robles for any time in the past decade, Heather and Justin Smith’s Saxum Vineyards continues to fashion sensational, world-class wines from a number of top sites on the west side of Paso Robles."

My second time trying Saxum and I got to say these wines have such character. Luscious and ripe. Dark fruits, liqueur, peat, violets, garrigue. Ending is tannic and long. Impressive balance for a heavy weight wine like this. Please refrain from drinking this if you have a bottle, still quite youthful even for my taste. With a handful of years cellering it could become legendary.
