Rare new release from cult producer Saxum. 96 Points Robert Parker: "I tasted a representative blend of the 2016 G2 Vineyard, a wine that's still youthfully primary, revealing spicy aromas of cherries, plums and wild berries. On the palate, it's full-bodied, bright and taut, with fine-grained but distinctly savory tannins that are already nicely integrated into its generous core of fruit. The blend contains 42% Grenache, 35% Mataro, fully 20% Tannat and 3% Zinfandel, and Smith observes that he was very careful in fermenting the Tannat to avoid extracting excessive structure... ...Needing no introduction for anyone that’s followed the Wine Advocate or the wine scene in Paso Robles for any time in the past decade, Heather and Justin Smith’s Saxum Vineyards continues to fashion sensational, world-class wines from a number of top sites on the west side of Paso Robles."

Had this Sunday evening. Surprisingly approachable for such a young wine from Justin Smith at Saxum, the wine is fantastic right out of the gate and just blossoms from there. Fantastic.

Pretty sure the 2016 is the first vintage of Saxum’s G2 cuvee. This one is 42% grenache, 35% mataro, 20% tannat, and 3% zin. I just call it awesome.
