Roar Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

$58

ROAR makes some of the best and hardest to get new Pinot Noirs in California.  The Sierra Mar Vineyard is a rare Pinot sold out at the winery. 97 Points Wine Enthusiast "Editor's Choice": "Rich and ripe in aromas of red cherry, caramel and oak, this bottling is made elegant and complex from the crushed slate and stony qualities that thrive throughout. A concentrated Bing cherry flavor rings on the bonedry palate, lifted by mint and more chiseled stone. This is amazingly ripe and delicious, yet hewn with impressive minerality." ...A top producer in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Roar is run by Gary and Rosella Franscioni, with the wines now made by Scott Shapley as of the 2013 vintage (they were previously made by Ed Kurtzman). This is fantastic lineup of Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Roar is owned by Gary & Rosella Franscioni, who planted and own the famed Rosella's Vineyard, Gary's Vineyard and Pisoni Vineyard in California's Central Coast.

Deep, brilliant scarlet. A complex, expressively perfumed bouquet evokes spice-tinged red and blue fruits, exotic spices and potpourri, along with a deeper cola nuance and a hint of smoky minerality. Energetic and seamless on the palate, offering finely etched raspberry, boysenberry, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with polished tannins and resonating floral and berry notes. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, October 2020)

Very good example of a Burgundian Pinot. 91. I prefer a fuller Sonoma type Pinot.

Aromatic nose of strawberries, dried herbs, a bit of orange zest, wet soil. Palate is smooth and balanced, light entrance and tannins, medium acidity and warm finish afterwards.
