Ridge Vineyards Geyserville Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend 2016

$39.99

The most ageworthy of all Ridge zinfandels, the Ridge Geyserville can be magnificent when young. Special 50th Vintage Edition! 95 Points Connoissseurs Guide:  "Sporting a deep mix of dark fruits that runs from cassis to blackberries along with complexing elements of cocoa and earthy spice, this year's edition of the Ridge Geyserville evokes all the accustomed richness that we have come to expect. It is a well-extracted and eminently ageworthy offering whose tannic, youthfully tight structure warrants a wait, but its astringency is never out of bounds and its insistently fruity finish is the hallmark of a wine guaranteed to repay five or more years of keeping with great dividends." Located on the western edge of Sonoma's Alexander Valley, Geyserville was Ridge's first source of red wine grapes, other than Monte Bello Ridge. The combination of Geyserville's climate, gravelly soils, and varietal mix (zinfandel, carignane, petite sirah, alicante, mataro, etc.) imparts elegance and definition not usually associated with zinfandel. It's hard to describe a "typical" Geyserville. Each vintage is unique, distinct, extraordinary. Yet they do have elements in common, including the blackest of blackberry fruit, peppery spice, tar, cedar. The term "layered" was invented for Geyserville. And the wines change, re-inventing themselves in bottle, developing more nuance and complexity as years pass. The '73 still shines.

Good God, what a sensational wine is this 2016 Geyserville field blend from Ridge Vineyards, a predominant Zinfandel cuvée with 17% Carignane, 7% Petite Sirah, and 3% Alicante Bouschet. Totally hedonistic, with perfectly ripe blackberry, cassis, rich dark chocolate and steeped plum, intertwined with crunchy gravel, toasted spices and a delightful sweet tobacco note. The palate is full bodied but elegant, powerful yet perfectly poised, replete with youthful vigour, with a lingering - and totally unapologetic - sweet vanilla perfume that completes what is an exceptionally harmonious mouthfeel. It’s the sort of wine you can’t stop sipping. Ridge’s Geyserville holds a very special place in my heart. The 2000 was one of the first experiences that really sparked my love for wine as a young waiter around a decade ago. At ten or eleven years of age, that wine was truly memorable. I’ve been hooked on Zinfandel since, though I don’t drink nearly enough of it. This 2016 is the first Geyserville I’ve had for many years, and it has exceeded my high expectations. I cannot wait to try this in ten or fifteen years’ time.

Damn delicious Gville. Needs time to really show its greatness.

Good stuff. Not too simple. Firm, enough fruit.

Marvelous. Deep and rich blend. A lot of dark fruit (a plum, a blackberry) and red fruit (a cherry). With an oak, a chocolate, a vanilla. Very good acidity. A lot is going on in this wine. The producer assures about fifteen years potential. I believe him: I'll buy another bottle to check this wine about 2031-2032. If I live. :)
