Raen Winery Cuvée Royal St. Robert Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018

$64.99

95 points - limited release                       The Raen 2017 Royal St. Robert Cuvee Pinot Noir comes from a new generation of Mondavis, Carlo & Dante. Limited. 95 Points James Suckling: "Supple and intensely fruity with linear focus and brightness. Wonderful clarity and minerality. Medium body, long and focused. Drink now." 93 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "Raen's 2018 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is a fabulous introduction to these wines. Airy, gracious and beautifully perfumed, the Royal St. Robert is especially lifted in this vintage. Intense floral, savory and spice notes give the 2018 striking aromatic presence. The 100% whole clusters are evident, but also nicely layered into the wine's fabric. This is an especially ethereal style. I would prefer to give the 2018 a year or two in bottle, as it is a bit clenched, especially on the finish... Raen focuses on coastal sites where fruit can ripen at relatively low sugars. The wines are fermented with ambient yeasts and see a good deal of whole clusters. In tasting, the Raen Pinots convey the essence of site with tremendous depth and intensity, but no excess weight. Perhaps even more importantly, these are wines of real personality and breed. Don't miss them." When Robert Mondavi Winery was sold in 2004, the brothers joined their father Tim, Aunt-Marcia and grandfather Robert as they founded Continuum in 2005. In 2013 Carlo and Dante founded RAEN winery with the goal to produce world class Pinot Noir on the western hills of the Sonoma Coast. RAEN currently focuses on making three Pinot Noirs, from three unique sites on the Sonoma Coast.

pale ruby; very lifted, feminine, red cherry, rose petals, pine needles, spice; weightless on the palate, nice acidity, light fine grained tannins, only 12.5% ABV; selection of finest barrels, homage to their grandfather Robert Mondavi, 100% whole clusters, native ferment, aged in neutral French oak barrels

2018 Raen Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - produced by the grandsons of Robert Mondavi. Winemaker notes describe this wine as having aromas of red cherry, rose petals, violets, coastal forest floor, wet rock, and lifted red and black berries fill the bowl. I definitely get the red cherries and bright acidity with this one.

I love the aromatics with this one. A bouquet of dried flowers on the nose. Cherries and red berries on the pallet, and minerals on the finish. Elegant and bright. More old world style than modern California Pinot produced by Robert Mondavi’s grandson.

In a micro world where Sonoma Coast Pinot can be anything from overripe candy to verging on watery, Royal St. Robert kind of nails it. Carlo has put together a bulls-eye blend of earth and fruit, herbs, and texture. It shows restraint but it isn't diluted. The nose has all sorts of fresh red berries tossed in a basket with foraged dirty wild mushrooms and minty herbs. There is body. Plenty of acid too. Flavors of raspberry, rosemary, mint, leather, and cinnamon. Whole cluster, plush, with a little bit of stemmy pushback. Of the many faces of Cali Pinot, this one one of my favorites.

Overly rustic red fruits with limited supporting structure. Tastes much older than a three year old wine. Tastr.lile a slightly over the hill Pinot that's lost its Pizzazz. In a word, disappointing. 2018 vintage.

Surprise of the night. Cherry and raspberry with fresh potting soil, sandalwood and some herbs. Think I’m a fan of whole cluster fermentation. From Wine Merchants Best of the West 4.10.21.
