Pride Mountain Vineyards Napa County Sonoma County Merlot 2017

$62

New Merlot release from legendary Pride Mountain Winery.  One of the finest Merlots made in California. Limited. 93 Robert Parker: "Containing 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored Pride 2017 Merlot offers up pronounced notes of plum preserves, baked blackberries and black forest cake with suggestions of baking spices, licorice and dark chocolate. Full bodied, rich and velvety textured, the palate is laden with dark fruit and spice layers, beautifully defined by a refreshing line, finishing with great persistence....This beautiful estate, which sits on the top of Spring Mountain straddling both the Napa and Sonoma County lines, continues to turn out a super-impressive lineup of wines." 91 points Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine: "Pride’s 2017 Merlot is a serious, solidly structured wine that takes a moment or two in fully opening up, but, when it does, reveals lots of deep and well-defined dark fruit lightly overlain by creamy oak and accented with subtle touches of briar and forest floor. Already fairly complex for a wine as young as it is, it exhibits fine concentration and fruity muscle without erring to sinewy toughness, but its best clearly lies ahead and it warrants a stay of three to five years in the cellar lest it be drunk up in advance of reaching its very considerable best." 59% Napa 41% Sonoma

Lush and ripe. Beautiful. Drink young with a one hour decant, or could use 5 years laying down. Rich and decadent. I’m a fan of Pride and their jammy juice.

Mono Head

Started decanting at 4:52. Quite nice and balanced when just opened. Dark berries. Very initial taste had an edge on it that Was distinct but it disappeared within 5 mins. I am getting a sweet herbal taste on the finish. At 8:31: smell is super floral. First taste is good fruits. Bright. Well balanced. I think I am getting a lot more expressive fruits now. Baking spices (or what I call baking spices) on the finish. A note of bell peppers. Since I didn’t decant the 2012 and I am not drinking they side by side it’s not a fair comparison. However, my preference is the 2017. As I keep sipping this at 9:05 I wonder if there is a little too much fruit. This has been weird. I went from thinking this was a 9.1 to now maybe a 8.9 due to the overwhelming amount of fruit that isn’t well integrated after 5 hours. Will try again with another bottle.
