Plumpjack Napa Valley Syrah 2015

$59.99

96 Points - limited                              New release of Plumpjack's Syrah- limited.  95 Points Robert Parker:  "It is hard to believe that Plumpjack could make an even blacker purple wine than the 2014, but they have done just that with the 2015 Syrah. Slightly lower in alcohol at 15%, versus the 15.4% of the 2014, the opaque purple wine offers up blueberry and blackberry liqueur, charcoal, incense and white flowers in a gorgeously voluptuously textured wine that doesn’t quite show the nuances and delineation of the 2014, but keep in mind it is one year younger. This is packed and stacked and another potentially brilliant Syrah from Plumpjack. I wonder what their fruit source might be? Drink now-2023...This famed estate on the Oakville crossroads, which was once the Villa Mt. Eden winery, where Nils Venge made a succession of profound wines in the 1970s, is now owned by the Getty family and called Plumpjack. These are always among my favorite wines in Napa Valley, as they are consistently well-crafted and represent the best of the Oakville corridor." Grown in Napa, but inspired by the Northern Rhone style, this Syrah exhibits a smoky, gamey nose layered with white and black pepper, with complementary notes of blueberry and raspberry aromatics. Well structured, the palate is full of bright raspberries, black pepper and smoke. This wine has beautiful finesse, great concentration and vibrant acidity.

Medium bodied Shiraz from Napa. Tight! Plenty of power,. Needs a much longer decant than we had time for tonight.

Last bottle of Plumpjack I will ever drink. I think the wine is overpriced for its mediocrity. Way too much acid, no finish, overspiced. Considering it’s owned by the biggest fraud in the US, Gavin Newsom, I’m not surprised but this solidifies my decision to never give them a dime.

Deep purple color. Black licorice and another candy note I couldn’t quite pinpoint - peppermint maybe - on the nose. Dark cherry and cassis notes with great texture and balance. A fun wine to enjoy on its own.
