Plumpjack Napa Valley Merlot 2018

$66

95 Points                                             New release of Plumpjack's Oakville Estate Merlot - limited. previous ratings: 95 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The Merlot is aromatically expressive and dense, a combination that is hugely appealing. Sage, mint, licorice, chocolate, lavender and black cherry jam run through this large-scaled, beautifully resonant Merlot. The interplay of elements here is really quite striking. There is quite a bit to look forward to. A dollop of Malbec rounds out the blend." 92 Points Robert Parker:  "Containing a 4% splash of Malbec, the deep purple-black colored 2016 Merlot opens with notions of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves, spice cake and black pepper with hints of garrigue and wild sage. Full-bodied and boldly fruited in the mouth, the juicy black fruit is well framed by rounded tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and spicy."

Monday evening we opened the 2018 Plumpjack Napa Valley Merlot, from Angnin, California. This is a blend of 94% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, black plum, violets, herbal notes, spice, menthol and earth. On the palate there is black cherry, blackberry, plum, vanilla, mocha, violets, herbal notes, spice and earth. This is a medium to full bodied wine medium + acidity and medium to medium + fine grippy tannins that brings us around to a long black fruit graphite finish. Enjoy the rest of your week in hopes your weekend bring many fine wines. Nostrovia!

This one’s for @Paul K. Seek this bad boy out, too. It drinks like a Merlot masquerading as a cab. Rich, plush and sweet. Decadent nose and palate. Gathers pace with airtime. On the 93pt bubble. Let me see what wifey says…

I don’t inhale (didn’t Bill Clinton absolve himself with that line at some point)? Anyway, when your crew are floating around, you need to play high post. A benchmark Cuban gets the job done. Plumpjack Merlot rarely falls short, and this is no exception. Cedar notes combine with exotic spices, particularly nutmeg. Fig paste and bitter cocoa give way to expresso notes and judicious sweetness. Excellent presentation, just requires a touch more density. Otherwise, rock n roll right here.

@Ron R I found it! Had lunch with my sister and they had this by the glass with Coravin. I agree with you - drinks a bit like a cab with chocolate and some funk. Loved it!
