Peter Michael Winery 'Ma Belle-Fille' Chardonnay 2015

$159

Rare new Chardonnay release from cult winery Peter Michael. Limited. 98-100 Points Robert Parker: "The 2015 Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille was hit less hard by the damaging winds during the blossom than the other vineyards, and production was lower but similar to 2014, with 2,320 cases produced in 2015 versus 2,523 in 2014. This is a multiple-clone selection with Old Wente joining the Hudson, Montrachet and Calera clones in this vineyard, which was planted between 1998-2000. The 2015 Ma Belle-Fille shows notes of baked apples, nectarines, poached pear and honeysuckle in a full-bodied, extraordinarily pure, crisp, zesty style. This magnificent Chardonnay has a finish of close to a minute. It has essentially the same aromatic and flavor profile as well as huge body and concentration that also characterized the 2014, with oodles of caramelized citrus and honeysuckle in its explosive aromatics and intense flavors. Both are fabulous Chardonnays like their siblings and should be drunk over the next 10-12 years.... ...Peter Michael is an impeccably run, world-class winery and it is probably impossible to find a greater set of Chardonnays anywhere else in the world, with one exception – the seven cuvées of Chardonnay made by Mark Aubert, ironically, one of Peter Michael’s former winemakers!

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three days. Best of Day 3. The 2015 “Ma Belle-Fille” pours a light gold color with medium+ viscosity. On the nose, developing with notes of fruit cups (the ones with pineapples and peaches), lemon bars, honeysuckle, and cashews. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and buttery but integrates better by Day 3. Leesy. The alcohol is medium+. For my palate, this was tough to love the first couple days as it lacked balance. By Day 3 however, it was quite becoming. Still a baby at 9 years. Drink with immense patience or better yet, after 2028 and through 2035 easy.

Beautiful. The Cali examples present more oak. Loving this for the citrus fruits and acidity. Just throttle back on the oak.

Flamboyant aromas of orange/honeysuckle and green drupe fruits. Light on the front of the palate yet gains steam from there. Warm shortbread with a side of macadamia nuts. Hint of tarragon and white pepper make for a minute plus finish. Decant for at least an hour.

Beastly and refined at the same time. Concentrated and intense. Needed a good decant. Complexity came out after a couple of hours. Wowski.
