Perro Docs North Edna Valley Pinot Noir 2012

$74.99

North is the new Pinot Noir from the Central Coast Rhone Master John Alban.  Extremely limited. 94 Points Antonio Galloni:  "Black cherry, plum, cloves, smoke, new leather and licorice meld together in the 2012 Pinot Noir. Ample, rich and dramatic in the glass, the 2012 is all about power and intensity. This explosive Pinot from volcanic soils is explosive from start to finish. The 2012 was aged in 60% new oak, all of which it handled with grace." Starting in 1985, John Alban planted grapes for other people until he bought an estate in 1989. With a focus on creating wines made from Rhône Valley varietals, Alban came to be a pioneer of the Rhone Rangers movement, and is considered one of the most influential American Rhone producers. Though the focus is on rhone varieties, the Alban pinot noir is a beautiful, fill flavored wine. The richness of the wine is emphsized, which is typical of Alban wines, and the pinot is beautifully balanced.

Another surprise for me tonight. My last encounter made me think of Syrah but I think this now has thrown the baby fat and shows more Pinot characteristics. Nice acidity at the end makes it taste less full-bodied than the aromas, structure and color otherwise suggests.

An interesting and perplexing wine that plays it in both camps. To my palate not really varietal correct but the sheer quality of winemaking is evident so I'm enjoying it for what it is - a great red wine that fits a myriad of dishes at the dining table.

Super ripe smelling. Tastes Pinot like but goes into a bitter astringent finish

13.8% Alc. My 2nd encounter with this Pinot Noir from John Alban/Glenn Skrabanik. Initially this showed very little PN characteristics but after 4 days in the fridge this is actually turning into a very nice wine. Something tells me it will be drinking great by 2030...

A big Pinot from John alban - could be mistaken for a cotes du Rhone

Labeled as 13.8% alc. Not in a million years would I have guessed Pinot in a blind tasting. Super dense, concentrated and long however this one has me scratching my head....?? Rating reserved for now.

North is made by Alban, not bad. 2013 was rated higher, but went for the extra year of bottle age, at least for tonight. One day this pouring picture is going to backfire on me, I'll post it though!

A HUGE fan of John Alban's wines...but this is not his best effort. A bit over extracted in my opinion, this wine lacks the balance that is a staple for John's Rhone Ranger wines. Good...but not great.

Not a big fruit wine, my guess is stems included in the fermentation. Dark color the tart cherry fruit is closed down, but a long cherry/acid finish. I think this may age a long time or will not improve as the fruit fades; will be interesting to check back.
