Paydirt Paso Robles Zinfandel Blend 2012

$29.99

A phenomenal new red blend from winemaker McPrice Meyers and Patrick McNeil. If you like big red blends like the Prisoner you'll love this! The dark, black fruit from the Zinfandel,Syrah, and Petite Sirah play the leading role in this five varietal heritage blend. Red fruit elements emanate from the Grenache, while the Mourvedre lends an inky, earthy impression and weight to the palate. This wine is complex, concentrated, and well-structured. It erupts with endless plum, blackberry, andcurrant as well as anise, licorice, black pepper, and othersavory notes. The tannins are soft, well-managed, and perfectly balanced with the acidity. The blend is: Zinfandel 46%, Syrah 26%, Grenache 12%, Petite Sirah 12%, Mourvedre 4%.  Each varietal was fermented separately in small open top bins. 5 days cold soak,15 days on the skins,20% whole cluster, aged in 20% new French oak barrels for 20 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered

A fun, modern Cali-style blend. I find it more interesting than the Prisoner and fans of those wines should give this a try.

I really enjoy field blends and this is no different except maybe a touch too much on oak. Tell you what though, it's four times the wine "prisoner" is and not over-inflated in price.
