Paul Jaboulet Aîné Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2015

$44.99

A fantastic buy from the Southern Rhone! High recommended Crozes Hermitage from Paul Jaboulet. 97 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "The finest vintage to date, better even than the stellar 2010, the 2015 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert is a gorgeous, deep, layered, and incredibly satisfying Crozes. Blackcurrants, olive tapenade, truffles and earthy notes all emerge from this full-bodied, gorgeously textured and seamless 2015. With fine tannin and no hard edges, it can be drunk today or cellaring for 15-20 years." 94 Points Antonio Galloni: "(made from vines that range from 40 to 60 years old; raised for a year in oak barrels, 20 percent of them new) Youthful violet. Powerful mineral- and spice-accented blue fruit liqueur and violet aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice and white pepper. Concentrated and expansive on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cherry and spicecake flavors and an exotic Indian spice quality that builds on the back half. Shows excellent clarity and lift on the finish, which is framed by velvety, harmonious tannins that fold smoothly into the juicy dark fruit. 93+ Points Robert Parker: "The 2015 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert is a super effort, packed with savory notes of black olives and crushed stones. It's full-bodied and rich, with a hint of cedary oak, but there's plenty of fruit and ripe tannins on the lingering finish. Like some of those fine Thalabert vintages of the past, it should drink well for a couple of decades... ...Since the Frey family purchased this historic firm in January 2006, the winemaking process and equipment have gone through a series of dramatic changes. Now, I feel the team, winery and various terroirs are finally operating smoothly as a whole, and the recent releases are among the best Paul Jaboulet Aîné wines ever produced. Caroline Frey says that's because the biodynamic practices are finally paying big dividends in the domaine vineyards. No doubt that has played a role, but the winemaking here has also adapted over time, paying less homage to Bordeaux and becoming more Burgundian/Rhônish in style. Consumers can visit the company's caveau and wine bar, conveniently located on the main market square of Tain l'Hermitage, to try the wines for themselves."

Dark as Cot/Tannat, lots of debris, and a bit overextracted; dark ripe and dried berries, charcuteries, and peppercorn on the nose; bone dry and tannic on the palate (and teeth), full-bodied and fruit-forward ok mid-palate, but steely and unexciting finish. I think this was an unlucky bottle variation and will test another bottle next week.

Really enjoyable Syrah - deep dense blackberry that has a good grip on the finish.

We knew it was super young but couldn’t keep her hands off of it to compare to the 1995 we had just enjoyed. Opaque ruby color, tightly wound. Good potential in 3-5 yrs

I had yet to try the 2015 Domaine de Thalabert when I noticed a bottle staring at me on the shelf at La Buvette so, naturally, I had to grab it. Popped and poured; served on the spot with Boeuf Bourgogne and Raclette with Paris Ham. Tightly wound at this stage but there’s a lot to like already. Blackberries, violets and black pepper on the nose. Blackberries, spices, savory smoked meat and minerals that suggested a dried blood-like quality on the palate. Firm but fine tannins. This bottle was very well liked by our crew and worked very well with our meal. I’m pleased to have some in my cellar.

Put a bunch of these in the cellar; drinkable now but lots of potential. Dark and red fruits, sweet spices, pepper, some fleshiness, ceder notes, some tight teeth-coating tannins and a long satisfying finish

My second bottle of the 2015 Domaine de Thalabert and another solid showing if not ever so slightly less expressive than the previous bottle. That being said, this was a lovely compliment to the venison stew and I’m still quite bullish on the future of these.

This is still a very young baby Hermitage, but is delicious even now if you give the tannins time to mellow. Will be especially fantastic in 5+ years. Nose of prune, blackcurrant, pepper, leather, and earth. Big tannins on the palate, with notes of tart cherry, oak, loads of pepper. A great wine that will get even better with age. I will definitely be purchasing a few more bottles to hold.
