From one of California's most celebrated winemakers Paul Hobbs. This is a rare single-vineyard Pinot release. 94 Points Robert Parker: "The 2012 Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez Vineyard reveals a big, meaty, premier cru Pommard-like character filled with kirsch liqueur, sassafras, bouquet garni and forest floor. Exuberant and full-bodied, sadly, there are only 313 cases of this big-time winner. Drink now-2025...Paul Hobbs is undoubtedly one of the world’s finest consultants, and as Americans we’re lucky to have this New York State-born winemaking guru right in the heart of the Russian River, turning out a bevy of wines from both Napa (reviewed in issue 215) and the following items from their estate vineyards in Sonoma as well as from purchased fruit. Hobbs has a separate entity now, which is aimed at producing good value wines under the Cross Barn by Paul Hobbs moniker. There’s some juicy, high-quality stuff in these cuvées." Leans more toward the ripe style, but acidity balances it out. Black pepper and black cherry dominate, and some roasted plum. Dark chocolate covered strawberries with a sweet yet smoky note here too.

"I'm hoping they shut down further vineyard planting in Sonoma to avoid a further monoculture. I'm looking for my next vineyards to be in Annapolis." -Paul Hobbs

Excellent. Drank in time but could tell it was on the cusp of getting overripe. Nose wasn’t that appealing. Drank light and had depth. Very good. Would get again.
