Paloma Napa Valley Merlot 2011

$57

Extremely limited  Paloma 2011 Merlot. Get the new vintage before the ratings come out!  This tiny winery on Spring Mountain rocketed from obscurity to collector status overnight when the 2001 vintage was chosent as Wine Spectator's 'No. 1 Wine in the World' and ever since has been hard to get.94 Points Brix26:  "The  Merlot is once again a blend of Estate Merlot and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The resulting wine is a big, world-class red wine capable of improving with bottle aging for 10 to 15 years. Complex aromas of black berry fruits, black stone fruits, chocolate, tobacco, spice and floral notes with a mineral overtone. On the palate the wine has a big silky mouth feel, well balanced, with flavors of berries, fruit, cocoa, cassis, and spice, and a long spicy finish."Wine Spectator #1 Wine in the World in 2001.

Always a great merlot and despite being slightly more restrained from their norm, this particular vintage is one of my favorites. Bright and light, big flavors of cherries and raspberries, some Oak and a really nice minerality that I haven’t noticed in prior vintages.

Easily one of the best merlots coming out of Napa. Interestingly enough, I think the ‘11 vintage probably benefitted this wine as it has gorgeous restraint. Black cherry, cassis, little bit of blueberry, toasted oak. Needed almost 2hrs in the decanter to really strut its stuff.

Had it with braised goat. Good wine but not worth $70.

Bright, Cherry, raspberry, hint of oak, should probably ideally go another 3-5 years before opening. Well balanced, and lighter-bodied than expecting. Really surprised to see 14.8% ABV

Bold "mountain" Merlot (15% vol), with a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon. This was good but I don't really understand why this wine is so highly rated. Might be the vintage.
