Pahlmeyer Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2012

$69.99

New release of Pahlmeyer's Sonoma Coast Pinot!94 Points Robvert Parker: "The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2012 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast reveals copious notes of brambleberries and mountain berries, forest floor, spring flowers and spice. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannins as well as a fleshy, succulent texture, good purity, and the oak pushed to the background, it should drink beautifully for 10-12 years. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it was sourced from the Halberg and Wayfarer vineyards." In 1998, Pahlmeyer (know for their Napa Cabs and Chardonnay) purchased the Wayfarer Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast near Flowers, Williams Selyem, and Marcassin, and spent years preparing the site for their first-ever Pinot Noir. Winemaker Erin Green worked with Bob Cabral of Williams-Selyem to choose a dozen Pinot clones, and planted using dense spacing and trellising reminiscent of Burgundy. The result? The Pahlmeyer Pinot Noir is a stunning, sensuous Pinot with a nose of Bing cherries and rich earth, with blackberry and elegant tannins on the palate; the wine has a long complex finish with touches of plum and spice. The fruit and acid balance make it a quintessential Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, lively in the mouth with lots of stuffing and complexity at the same time.

Deep Ruby with aromas of berries, flowers and earthy spice. On the palate rich cherry, plum, cranberry and a touch of raspberry. Very smooth tannins, balanced well with acidity, nice mouth feel, with the right amount of oak. This medium body Pinot finished with good length ending with mineral spice. Should age well.

This was big - fruit forward - tannins - blackberry, current, raspberry, cassis - more a Sonoma coast cab than a Pinot. Delicious - but there was nothing Pinot about this wine except the label and the grapes. Perhaps too much time in a new oak barrel / oak bombed maybe?
