New release of Orin Swift's Papillon Cabernet has arrived! Fast becoming a cult classic, grab a few bottles before it goes away. 94 Points Robert Parker: "The 2014 Bordeaux Proprietary Blend Papillion (15,748 cases) was aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Fairly priced for what the consumer gets, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc (15.1% alcohol) exhibits notes of forest floor, graphite, blackcurrant, blackberry fruit and spring flowers followed by a full-bodied, unctuously textured, deep, rich pure wine to drink over the next 10-15+ years." Orin Swift Cellars is best known for The Prisoner Zinfandel blend, one of our most popular wines the last few years. Winemaker Dave Phinney has turned his midas touch at creating delicious blends to produce the third vintage of Papillon, a stunning bordeaux-blend from choice Napa Valley vineyards in Howell Mountain, Rutherford, Oakville and St. Helena. 60% Cabernet, 37% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. A beautiful, rich young Cabernet that has been getting serious buzz in the wine world,

Pop & pour. Love the nose: Christmas baking spices, figs, raisins, mulled cider, plums, anise and clove. The palate is a bit flabby, the bodily structure needing more time to develop in the bottle. Even now a good decant is in order to assist in the opening process as it’s muted now. Not to mention it’s a complete bomb at 15.1% ABV. Edit: 92+. After approximately 40 minutes in the decanter and 30 minutes in the glass this wine lost the flabby baggage that was readily apparent shortly after opening and slowly began to take shape, thus revealing a more collected & rounded out wine that everyone eventually enjoyed, even my wife, who has not enjoyed this selection in the past.

Big and fruity! Great pairing with a Porterhouse Steak! Dark cherry, baking spice and a hint of bourbon on the nose. Big black fruit and cassis flavors with a touch of vanilla, graphite and dried herbs. Creamy and silky finish that goes on for a while. 15.1% Alcohol but it does not seem that “hot.” Soft and powerful at the same time! Should improve with age and I’m giving the next bottle a few years to sleep.

If i had this blind, i wouldn't have guessed it was just bordeaux varietals. At least on opening. Ya it might come off as manipulated, but the more it sat in my glass the more i was appreciating it. At that price point its hard for me not to get a mike smith, kirk venge cab or get a really nice single vineyard zin from a top zin producer.
