Brand new release from Orin Swift! Palermo is a fantastic buy in Napa Cabernet under $40. A stunning, true-to-form Phinney wine: the 2019 Palermo Cabernet is rich, dense, concentrated, fruit-forward and velvety. Each year, they purchase more Cabernet grapes than they need for Mercury Head and Papillon so they can have a virtual palette of vineyards and corresponding "spice rack" elements, if you will, to choose from to make the perfect blends. When their selection runneth-over and some of the sums of the parts behave more positively on their own, they deserve to be bottled separately and that is how a new wine was born, Palermo. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc blend selected from Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Spring Mountain vineyards.

I couldn’t resist. And I wasn’t disappointed. Tanins were much softer than I feared. Some strawberry here, but much more. I had the Usine Pinot a couple of weeks ago and now the cab. Orin Swift is climbing high in my ranking.

Deep color and incredible nose. Picking up french oak, cassis, blackberry, and sugar crystals. Wonderfully, lightly tannic. Nice complexity, delicious finish.

Highly alcoholic, with smooth tannins. Cinnamon, chocolate, overripe black fruit on the nose. It's good, but not $45 good. And the pretentious label and really heavy bottle don't quite make up for it. No knock on Orin Swift; it's a CA industry-wide problem.

Not the first time I’ve had this, but it’s been a while. Big, juicy and bold at 15.5% abv. With juicy burgers and potato salad.
