Orin Swift Mercury Head Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

$119.99

Orin Swift Cellars winemaker, Dave Phinney, is well-know for his Prisoner Zinfandel.  He also makes this fantastic, rare Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley - very limited. previous vintage 98 Points Robert Parker: "The 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 18 months in 50% new French oak, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Mercury Head. Certainly one of the more intriguing labels, with a real Mercury-head dime embedded in the glass bottle, this cuvée comes from blocks in Taplin, Morisoli and Atlas Peak vineyards. The final blend is a selection of their best barrels, bottled and aged another six months prior to release. This is a killer Cabernet Sauvignon, full-bodied and multilayered, with stunning blueberry and blackberry fruit, floral acacia notes, a hint of brioche and subtle toasty oak followed by a massive, full-bodied wine with sweet tannin and beautifully integrated acidity, alcohol and wood. This profound Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well now and for 25+ years. Dave Phinney may well be 2015's winemaker of the year for this wine taster." This rare wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Taplin vineyard in St. Helena and the Morisoli vineyard in Rutherford. As in the previous vintage, it offers a complex intriguing structure along with vibrant dark fruit and subtle oak shadings. Cellar for up to a decade, or enjoy now with some aeration. Tiny production on this one, so don't wait long.

A Mercury Dime graces the label. Intense concentrated ripe black berry fruit aromas with smoky notes. On the palate blackberry and currents on the edge of sweetness, with tobacco and cacao tones wrapped in fine smooth tannins. Lingering with a little heat ending with a dried cherry fruit character and mineral tones. Another nice offering from Orin Swift!

Normally not a huge Cab fan but this one was so smooth after decanting. Amazing.

Maybe it's the ambiance but this is much better than expected.

Leather and oak nose. Purple, bold, dry, mild tannins. Plums with chocolate and coffee beans. Over 2 years since my last bottle, aging very well.

I think this is good, probably if you’d asked me a year ago I’d have said it was very good. No doubt solid Cabernet but I find it a bit two dimensional when compared to others at or around the same price point. Good fruit, oak, vanilla and smoke on the palate, nose is ripe but perhaps a little subdued. There’s a nice balance to this wine but it lacks a deeper complexity and subtlety. Enjoy on day one as by day two the high alcohol has taken over and eaten into the wines flavours.
