Opus One Overture Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend NV

$149.99

Overture is the second wine of Opus One.   Until now, this wine has been only available at the winery and a few select restaurants! Limited. This release is a blend of vintages 2007, 2010 and 2011. Made exactly like the Opus One and sourced from the same estate vineyards, the Overture too is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon making up around 70%.  Aged in French oak, Overture is comprised of the five classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Full bodied but approachable in its youth, Overture shows generous dark fruit aromas and flavors with a soft, supple mid-palate. As a fine wine, Overture will develop beautifully over time. In keeping with the tradition of many great Bordeaux estates, Opus One produces a fine second wine called Overture. Since 1993, Overture has been crafted as a part of our relentless pursuit of quality for Opus One.  Every acre of our estate vineyard is farmed with the attention to detail and singular focus required to produce Opus One.  Nevertheless, in any given year, not all of the parcels from our estate are selected for the final blend of Opus One.  When these wine lots are afforded additional time in barrel, in combination with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine achieves a remarkable elegance and complexity that represents a superb expression of our estate. This is Overture.

Opus One is a partnership by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of France and Napa Valley’s, Robert Mondavi. Beginning in 1993 Opus One created a 2nd wine, Overture, was only available at the winery, now in wine shops. A multi-vintage blend, about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice fresh fruit aromas, sweet and ripe. On the palate cherry and blackberry, with earthy tones, Bordeaux like, adding notes of cacao and vanilla oak. Fine tannins, lingering ending with earthy mineral. Since no vintage, this wine could become old sitting on shelf. Pricey, other great wines for less.

Vintage composition of 2014-15. Dark chocolate, dates, vegetation, plush plums, blackberries, boysenberries, eucalyptus, graphite, nuanced vanilla. Such a delicious blend.

This never ceases to amaze. It’s “just” a second wine but the high standards and consistency are outstanding. This was bought on release in 2012 (so despite it being an NV it’s probably a mix of the 2010-2011 vintage?).

Black fruit, Cassis, vanilla with a hint of minerality. Bold almost syrup-like consistency. Long finish. While not big tannins, felt more Cab like than Merlot. Great with sharp Italian cheese.

Pulled this one out of the cellar as a backup and it never disappoints. Ready to drink from the open and the strength of the 2012 (likely a mix of 2011/2012, given when we bought it). Great mix of fruit/tannins. #happynewyear #nye2018
