My Favorite Neighbor MFN Blanc Chardonnay 2021

97 pts                                                                               New white release from Paso cult producer Booker Vineyards. 97 points Robert Parker: "The My Favorite Neighbor 2021 MFN Blanc Chardonnay is very ripe in style with scents of banana chip, apple pie, jasmine, allspice and brown sugar. The full-bodied palate is packed with ripe, spicy fruits and plenty of refreshing acidity, and it finishes long with a satiny, mouth-coating texture. It's an old-school style reminiscent of Napa that fans of ripe, oaked Chardonnays will enjoy." Estate Notes: A deep and rich hue of golden   straw gives the first clue that this is a serious Chardonnay. Aromas of pear, green apple, and lime peel jump out of the glass followed by more nuanced fragrances of orange blossom, ginger root, and brioche. The sensation on the palate casually demonstrates both broad depth and laser like focus. An assertive core of acid and saline minerality rests completely ensconced in rich flavors of pie crust, clotted cream, and burnt caramel. Drink now for fresh vibrance, or in ten years for wild complexity. An homage to Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Winery became an obsession. Sourced from exceptional vineyard sites around Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and south to Edna Valley, this wine is cultivated meticulously by the farmers who have become My Favorite Neighbors. With their dedication to the land, we are able to craft a world class wine without any shortcuts or compromises. Welcome to our Neighborhood. 2019’s abundant winter rain and a long, moderate growing season allowed for extended hang times and exceptional fruit quality.

I cooked Dover Sole tonight. Paired it with MFN. Surprisingly, I found this to be less focused and imprecise - flabby, actually. Good weight on the mid palate, but too soft and round at the edges - not a great compliment for the fish. Notes of beeswax honey, earthy with moderate sweetness. No acidity to talk about, and that maybe the main flaw here. Big disparity from the last time I tasted this. Wifey gave this 94, but editorial liberties have been applied to the final rating.

This wine sits golden in the glass and offers a beautiful nose of apricot, Meyer lemon and oak spice, with a nice dollop of salinity in the mix. That savory note explodes on the palate and brings all that lovely fruit along with it. The acidity is right on the mark - food friendly while maintaining the creamy mouthfeel. The oak treatment is noticeable, but not at all overdone, and it leaves a nearly buttery sensation on the lengthy finish.

My first Booker bottling, and it’s underwhelming. Ripe and a bit over-oaked, it has a strange bitter taste. Not my cup of tea.

Won’t you be my neighbor? ~ Mr. Rogers The 2021 My Favorite Neighbor Blanc is a Paso Robles Chardonnay produced by Eric Jensen. This wine is delicious. Lively nose, racy acidity, layered complexity, and balance are just a few good descriptors for this wine. I would like to see how this wine evolves with a couple years of bottle age. It would be smart to add this to your list. This wine falls in the “I’m glad I grabbed a few of these” category.
