Mount Peak Winery Gravity Red Blend 2014

$44.99

95 Points -  New                                Fantastic new discovery!                95 Points Robert Parker: " Even better is the incredible 2014 Proprietary Red Blend Gravity, which is an intriguing blend of 33% Petite Sirah, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Zinfandel and the rest Syrah, Grenache and Barbera aged in 28% new French oak. Virtually all of it comes from the Monte Rosso Vineyard with tiny quantities from Frei Ranch and Snows Lake vineyards owned by Gallo. Another exuberant whopper at 15.9% alcohol, the wine is an opaque purple color, with notes of pen ink, creosote, black truffle, blackberry, blueberry, and a hint of white chocolate in a full-bodied, massive, layered, rich and concentrated style. Interesting enough, the alcohol at 15.9% is balanced by the wine’s rather zesty acidity and modest pH of 3.46. This is a killer wine at a great price for something this profound. 5,000 cases were produced. The Mount Peak Winery is named after the original ghost winery that was on the Monte Rosso property, now owned by the Gallo family. The three wines I tasted are super-impressive, powerful, rich and concentrated. The story of Mount Peak Winery begins more than a century ago at the celebrated Monte Rosso Vineyard and culminates with the recent revival of the brand by Gallo. A vestige of one of California's great "ghost" wineries, the wines are a tribute to the extraordinary facility that once stood there. Originally built in 1886, Mount Peak was a marvel of innovation with its three-story, gravity-flow system built from rock directly sourced from the dry-farmed Monte Rosso vineyard. While it ultimately emerged as one of California's top producers, it was closed during Prohibition and left abandoned to the elements, laying silent for decades. Over 130 years later, Gallo has revived the site and the vineyard, perched at nearly 1,300 feet along the spine of the Mayacamas Mountains, straddling the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The steep hillsides are set against a dramatic backdrop and the new Mount Peak label will focus on Cabernet, Zinfandel, and a red blend from the original Monte Rosso fruit. The Gravity is made from plots within the vineyard as well as fruit sourced from Frei Ranch in Dry Creek Valley and Snows Lake in Lake County. It's 33% Petite Syrah, 29% Cab, 21% Zin, 10% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 2% Barbera.

45 bucks for 95 pts parker. This is a great value blend (petite, cab, zin, syrah, grenache, barbera) that gallo has produced from its monte rosso vineyard. Not oaky. Not sweet. Just concentrated fruit and generous acid...very balanced wine actually for 15.9 alcohol. I got blackberry, plum, a little chocolate and vanilla. 93-94

Lovely cuvée. A new world macerated blend that tickles the pallet. Berries galore with a full mouthfeel and longer finish.

Plum, cassis, currant, blueberry, lavender, grape juice, fig, & stale cigarette smoke on the nose. Juicy front with a sharply dry finish. Lightly tart notes of dark cherry, raspberry jam, lush cranberry, blackberry, blueberry, & violet. Medium-plus acidity. Not as bold as I prefer, but still lovely.
