Mount Eden Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$69.99

One of California's most "ageable" Cabernets comes from Mount Eden's vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains. As always its on of the most limited Cabs we carry. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is developing beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, tobacco, bay laurel, dark chocolate and rich soil. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, multidimensional and concentrated, with wonderful savory depth, fine grained but firm tannins and a long, taut and tangy finish. While this is firmly shut down today, its potential for the future is fully evident: expect it to begin to come into its own around its tenth birthday." This estate-bottled blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, in the main, with Merlot and a soupçon of Cabernet Franc, may be an outlier in the Pinot-dominated Santa Cruz Mountains today, but it comes with quite a pedigree: The vineyard was planted with a selection from pioneering vintner Martin Ray's late 1940s vineyard. That selection of Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings was taken from the La Questa Vineyard, which in turn was grafted in the 1890s to scions from Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux, France. "Mount Eden is one of the United States' great heritage estates," writes Robert Parker   .

This Santa Cruz Mountains AVA trip in San Jose was so much fun. We got really lucky and booked both Ridge and Mount Eden on the same day. In my opinion they are the two best representations of wine produced on this AVA. Unique dirt, grape growing, wine making and history.

Not yet released and that's good. Tightly wound red fruit and the same herbaceous aromas that pervade at the property.

Great lean Cab with loads of aging potential. Leathery, with plum, dark chocolate, bay leaf, black pepper and excellent acidity. Decant at least an hour.

Oh baby, this is class in a glass even young. Perfumed and floral aromatics lead to bright and dense flavors of currants and blackberries. Very nice.

2013 vintage. 85% cab, 7% merlot, 5% cab franc and 3% petite verdot. A little brickish and blackberry nose. Medium body. Great structure and acidity and will only improve once the wine drops that baby fat in a few years. Drinking better than the previous vintage currently.
