Morlet Family Vineyards Coeur de Vallée Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

98 Points Parker                                                               Morlet makes some of the most coveted wines in Sonoma and all of California. These are some of the top-scoring wines of the vintage. Limited. 97 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "From a valley floor site beside To Kalon, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Coeur de Vallée (76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc) boasts an incredibly sexy, full-bodied, thrillingly textured profile as well as to-die-for notes of blueberries, black cherries, dried herbs, and flowers. This powerful, blockbuster-styled beauty checks in near the top of the vintage, and while already drinking beautifully, it will keep for 15-20 years....I loved these latest releases from Luc Morlet and family, and they show a sensational mix of classic, balanced, even old-school, characters mixed with killer California fruit. As a whole, the 2014s show more elegance and complexity, with the 2015s possessing more power and richness. These are rockstar wines." 96 Points Robert Parker: "Only 100 cases were produced of the 2014 Coeur De Vallée Proprietary Red, which is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc. All of this comes from Oakville. The wine is incredibly complex with a dense purple color, a striking bouquet of violets, forest floor, licorice, fruitcake, blackberry and blackcurrants. It is powerful and rich with supple tannins and extraordinary concentration and purity. This is a magnificent wine to drink over the next 25 or more years." In St. Helena, the heart of the Napa Valley, Luc and Jodie Morlet handcraft vins de terroirs and unique cuvées from the surrounding Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast. Meticulously farmed vineyards and low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful yet refined wines displaying personality, complexity and graceful aging capability. By taking Old World principles and adapting them to California, the Morlet style results in wines which are harmonious in their intensity, richness and refinement. Unwavering commitment to quality leads to small yields, attentive sorting, and the highest standard when blending. Thus, a very limited amount of each wine is produced.

After visiting here last Fall, and leaving with more wine than any other visit (mostly due to their incredible white wines), this has been a fun wine to follow. This is my second to enjoy, and I think I have one left. For a 2014, this was pretty tightly coiled. 76 cab/24 cab franc. Love those percentages, especially from To Kalon. It certainly sports the classical powerful To Kalon flair with dominant black cherry and plenty of fragrant aromatics of violets and potpourri. Even after a few hours of bottle air, this remained tannic and slightly unyielding (very uncommon for 2014 valley floor Napa). At the end of the evening, it gave way to sweet pipe tobacco, black currant, dark spiced red fruits, and savory herbs. Hard to deny the powerful black cherry core that To Kalon normally sports. I’d hold for another 5yrs or decant 3+ hrs.

Quite a fruit bomb, vanilla. It’s well balanced but too much fruit for me. 9.1+

Weekend T-bone night needs a big red to match. The alcohol felt a tad strong here and this could still use another couple years to settle. Elegant yet powerful fruit and you get some mocha notes too as the wines gets more air. I usually wait 5yrs for a Morlet but could be more patient here.

#dfwe2018
