Michel Gassier Cercius Vieilles Vignes Côtes du Rhône Syrah Grenache 2015

$17.99

Simply put, the bang-for-the-buck factor on this huge Rhone wine is way off the charts. Robert Parker has called this wine "one of the greatest Cotes du Rhones I have ever tasted" and you won't need more than one sip to see why. No matter the vintage, the Cercius is always loaded to the brim with big, sexy fruit, but it is never overpowering. 91 Points Robert Parker:  "The Cotes du Rhone Cercius Vieilles Vignes from the Plateau de Domazan, is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah aged six months in concrete. Cercius is the Latin name for the legendary north/south whipping winds called the Mistral that dominate the southern Rhone Valley for one hundred or so days a year. The deep ruby/purple-colored 2013 Cercius boasts a stunning nose of camphor, incense, blackberries, cassis, kirsch and licorice. This full-bodied, opulent, saturated, fruit-dominated red wine is super-pure, incredibly well-balanced, full and stunning. Drink it over the next 2-3 years... ...Michel Gassier is receiving copious press (all positive and deservedly so) from French wine journalists, and he has been favorably reviewed in The Wine Advocate for nearly a decade. In this joint project with Philippe Cambie and Eric Solomon, he produces what may be his best value."

Good quality wine, appealing, ripe red fruit character with some herbal and earthy complexity. Shows varietal character and provenance, but rather simple and is not able to carry the high alcohol

Ruby in color with a wide reddish /purple rim. Nice nose of black currants, blueberries, wood, earth, light vanilla, tobacco leaf, spices, graphite, herbs, river rocks, licorice and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with cherries, sweet raspberries, tobacco, oak, licorice, blueberries, cloves, earth, vegetables, spices peppercorn, leather, smoke, chocolates and dark coffee. Medium on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a nice Côte du Rhône. Showing mild complexity and a nice mouthfeel. Not showing the high alcohol at all, which I liked. Well balanced and enjoyable by itself or with food. I paired it with a vegetarian flatbread. Very fruity right out of the bottle and much different after 45 minutes. This review is after it opens up. Peaking now and will be good in the next 2 years. 15% alcohol by volume. 87 Points. $15.
