Meyer Family Cellars Spitfire Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

$49

Just released and sourced exclusively. Fashioned by Matt Meyer, son of Silver Oak Cellars’ owners Bonny and Justin Meyer. About as limited as Silver Oak Wines and equally delicious, this rarity is an irresistible offer at a fantastic price. Tasting Notes:  "Spitfire is a good old American Cabernet that is polished and elegant. The aromas spring to life with ripe plum and blackberries jumping out of the glass. Once open for a few minutes, we start to see the telltale American Oak vanilla along with hints of caramel and pepper. Two years in oak have softened the palate, making this a very approachable Oakville red wine. As with previous vintages we get hints of cardamom and other savory characters. Unlike previous vintages, this wine does not seem to need extra bottle aging to settle down. The 2016 seems surprisingly drinkable for such a young cabernet, making it extremely enjoyable at the moment and an appropriate accompaniment to your next steak.100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.7% ABV.

Deep brooding garnet with and a thin violet rim. It’s easy to complain about California wines being overoaked so it’s only appropriate to give credit when it’s done well. Wonderful dark fruits and oak on the nose along with funky herbs and a hint of smoke. This deftly manages the balancing act of being a big Napa Cab while maintaining comparatively low alcohol. After decanting, there’s very little heat here. Plenty of beautiful dirt and minerality on the palate. The fruit is lively and present but doesn’t try to bring all the attention to itself. This is a really nice Napa throwback. Meyer Family Spitfire Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Exactly what I have been wanting lately. It’s been a while since I’ve had an oaky Cab, especially one in which it’s properly integrated and not overwhelming. Every now and then that’s the expression of Napa Cab I want and this did not disappoint. Vanilla, fig, espresso, and silky dark fruits wrapped in lavender and herbs.

Ever so slight acidity on the nose. Big full jammie blackberries, pomegranate, and a hint of chocolate on the palate. I want this wine to sit open for another 10 minutes though.

2014 - Old world style, starting with a little musty bouquet; took about an hour to open up; medium body with slight white pepper finish; good to have tried but will not buy again.
