Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Santa Lucia Highlands Monterey Co. Chardonnay 2015

$19.99

A fantastic Unoaked Chardonnay from the folks at Caymus.  90 Points Wine Spectator:  "A seductive style that captures effusively ripe peach and nectarine flavors. Features a juicy texture that's broad and layered. Despite using no oak, this leaves the impression of spicy, jazzy wood on the lingering finish. Drink now."   Monterey County is one of the best appellations in the world for producing Chardonnay. This region benefits from cool morning fog and afternoon breezes that result in a long growing season, producing intense fruit flavors balanced with vibrant acidity. Mer Soleil Silver is a pure, clean expression of our estate-grown Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay. The grapes that go into this Chardonnay are of the highest quality for a number of reasons: the unique climate, our vineyard location on east-facing slopes, vine-to-vine uniformity, low-yields and grapes picked at peak ripeness.

Smoke and salinity. Ripe yellow apples. Low acid. Fermented in concrete eggs.

Second wine for our wine pairing at Chef's Table this evening, paired with a green pea soup with a truffle poached egg and bacon. Light to medium yellow. Perfumey nose with tropical fruits and a bit clean. Medium acidity (5.5/10) and medium to medium plus bodied. Surprised this is unoaked. Layers of lemon curd and a creamy texture. Medium length finish. Drink till 2021.

Not great. Skip. Was better in the cement bottle. Too sweet and off putting. Not balanced.

Solid crisp Chardonnay. Great on a warm evening as a stand alone glass of wine.

I thought we liked this, but this time it was not great at all. 5/10 would not buy again.
