Mayacamas Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

$162

96 Points                                 Wine Spectator #2 Wine of 2019!  A great release from this legendary Napa estate perched high atop Mount Veeder. Owner/winemaker Bob Travers’ final vintage as former Screaming Eagle winemaker Andy Erickson takes over.  Limited. 96 Points Wine Spectator: "YThis distinctive red throws a lot of wild sage, herb and sassafras notes out first, while the core of intense red currant, damson plum and bitter cherry fruit waits its turn. The vibrant structure is built on acidity, pulling everything together through the iron-streaked finish. Should age wonderfully. Best from 2022 through 2040" High on the slopes of Mount Veeder, Mayacamas Vineyards has been a source of legendary California wine since 1889. Since the 1950ʼs the vinification and élevage of Mayacamas remains remarkably consistent and our continued commitment to employ classical techniques and tools is integral to the character of these wines. The mountain terroir at Mayacamas ranges from 1,800 to 2,400 feet in elevation and the estate spans 475 acres, only 50 of which are dedicated to vine. The regionʼs richly intense, age-worthy wines reflect the independent spirit of its mountain growers and vintners, borne of rugged conditions that demand craftsmanship at the highest level.

I ordered this by the glass at a steakhouse which claimed they were one of ten accounts in the US to get this: Mayacamas’ younger cab from vines which were only 10-15 years old. Since they weren’t from the original vines the company removes “Mt Veeder” from the bottle and still advertise it as a Cal Cab...well for a Mayacamas product it couldn’t be further than the “real thing”. At 27$ for a glass it was a big rip off - at Bin 54 in Chapel Hill, NC. Would not recommend this. Shame on Mayacamas for putting this out, explains why only 10 accounts have it. If anyone can shed more light on this please let me know in the comments.
