Martinelli "Giuseppe & Luisa" Russian River Valley Zinfandel 2014

$59.99

Limited release of Martinelli's legendary Sonoma Zinfandel. 96 Points Robert Parker: "Absolutely killer, the 2014 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa (16.4% alcohol) is opaque purple in color with notes of Asian spice, blackberry, blueberry, chocolate and espresso. The wine is complex, beautifully pure, and full-bodied, with a skyscraper-like texture and length. Drink it over the next 10-15+ years... ...One of the great families of Northern California, and of course, one of the highest quality producers, the Martinellis – and rather remarkably so – only estate-bottle 15% of their production from over 300 acres of beautifully situated vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. No doubt Helen Turley, who worked at Martinelli and mentored its winemaking team, left a profound influence on the quality of the Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs and Zinfandels, a fact that can’t be overstated. The Chardonnays all go through full malolactic fermentation and tend to see about 50% new oak. The Pinot Noirs are always 100% destemmed and largely spend no longer than ten months in about 60% new French oak. More specifics are included with the following tasting notes."

Funky for the first 20 minutes. But, then this one turned the corner and hit the throttle. This wine has an incredible nose: violets, spice cake, black fruit, raisins, cinnamon. Entry was full of black pepper, sweet plum, fruitcake, hint of candied bacon. Middle gains a dark chocolate, mocha, baking spice. Finishes dark, black pepper, sweet, still very youthful, full throttle, excellent acidity. I almost opened this a few hundred times but did manage to finally bury it in the collection until I actually sought it out and brought it home. I dare say that this one has a good 7 years left in it. Don't drink this one as a pop and pour. Decant at least 30 minutes and then enjoy it! I think it's in a really good spot right now, but I do believe that 1-2 years of additional bottle age will do this well.

Round two of the Zinfandel Showdown and this one is a wild one! 16.4 percent alcohol... and you can feel it in every sip. The blueberry, cocoa and espresso notes keep that in check and the soft texture makes it go down way too easy.

Still a rock star Zinfandel. Vanilla, a plethora of cinnamon, cherry mocha, nutmeg, baking spices, black fruit, chocolate raisins, and hints of gingerbread cookies on the finish. Dreamy.

Perfect blend of fruit and minerality. High alcohol but so smooth you don't taste it. Perfect balance and great finish!
