Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Luce della Vite Toscana Sangiovese Merlot 2019

$124.99

99 pts                                                                                 New release of the iconic Super Tuscan Luce Red, one of Italy's most sought-after wines. Limited. 99 Points James Suckling:  "Sophisticated aromas of lead pencil, graphite and blackcurrant. Hints of black olives and herbs, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and deep, with super precision and intensity to the tannins. Incredible balance of structure and finesse to this. Give it time in the cellar. Better after 2027." Luce was the first wine created in Montalcino by blending Sangiovese and Merlot. Combining the roundedness and softness of Merlot with the structure and elegance of Sangiovese might seem a rather obvious idea, and yet it took the insight and collaboration of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi Families to launch this innovative project in the land of the world renown Brunello di Montalcino, a wine made strictly from Sangiovese.

50/50 sangiovese grosso and merlot. Full bodied with dark fruit, some touches of coffee with bitterness and acidity but great structure with earthiness and great tannins with a long finish. Definitely something to try again.

Opened 6hrs before serving, no decant. Intense, gorgeous inky color. Fruits a bit hidden on the nose but after the long breathe nose is there. Wine is huge. Tannins are smooth. Gets better after each sip.
