Luli Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2018

$22.99

Fantastic new Pinot Noir discovery and an amazing value. Luli Wines are made by Jeff Pisoni in partnetship with Master Sommelier Sara Floyd. Grapes from this vintage were sourced from select, sustainably farmed vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The fruit was hand-sorted before fermentation on indigenous yeast and aged in neutral French oak barrels to let the terroir shine through. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered and is rewarding to drink in its youth, but will also reward with some bottle age. From the winery: "Both powerful and elegant. The aromatics are bright and vibrant with notes of wild strawberry, boysenberry, rose petal and earl grey tea. The palate is broad and full, with firm tannins giving structure and length with lasting flavors of bing cherries and baking spices. These are delicious, budget-friendly wines from Luli, the Pisoni family's project with Master Sommelier Sara Floyd.

Shimmering ruby. Pungent cherry, red berry and floral aromas are complemented by a zesty spice topnote. Taut and nervy on entry, then more fleshy in the midpalate, offering bitter cherry and raspberry flavors that show very good depth as well as energy. Fine-grained tannins lend gentle grip to a clinging finish that strongly echoes the spice note. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, October 2020)

This balanced, spice-tinged Pinot Noir offers sappy red fruit and floral character, with a spine of juicy acidity keeping things lively. A bit of air stretches it out and brings up a hint of musky earth. Finding delicious Pinot in the SLH is easy, but real values are far harder to come by. $24.00 (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, September 2020)
