Louis Roederer Brut Premier Champagne Blend NV

$58

A "Best Buy" from Louis Roederer, one of France's top Champagne houses.92 points Wine Enthusiast: This is a particularly good bottling of Brut Premier. Drawing on Roederer's famed reserve wines, it has a touch of toast that adds a round character to well as fresh, vivid lemon and grapefruit flavors. Drink this delicious, rich wine now."91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: (40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier): Pale gold. Spice- and mineral-accented orchard and pit fruits on the intensely perfumed nose, with hints of toasty lees and brioche adding complexity. Sappy, penetrating and floral on the palate, offering juicy Meyer lemon, pear and melon flavors braced by a smoky mineral underpinning. Closes spicy and very long, leaving a sexy honeysuckle note behind." 91 points Wine Spectator:  "A firm Champagne, with a finely meshed palate that layers the delicate mousse with hints of smoke and marzipan, complementing flavors of white cherry, dried apricot, salted almond and lemon preserves. Mouthwatering. Drink now through 2019.Decanter "Gold Medal & Non-vintage Champagne Trophy at 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards": Rich, biscuity nose with a hint of dried plum, candied and red fruit. Excellent flavours of brioche and toast with a fabulous fine mousse, very attractive complexity and a super minerally finish. A top class NV."

Tasted this about 2 years ago, a new batch, some lots underwent malolactic conversion enhancing flavor & weight. 40/40/20 blend, Pinot Meunier-20%. Founded in 1776, Reims France, rare family owned company, still managed by Roederer family. In 1833, Louis Roederer inherited company his uncle & renamed company under his namesake. Pale lemon, Fresh fruit aromas, nice mousse, rapid bubbles, citrus & toasty apple flavors, crisp & refreshing, long finish ending with lemon, smoke & yeasty mineral notes. Nice!

Today was an absolutely fantastic Friday hosting at the City Club by @Dan Fitzgerald . 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert wine. Served blind. Great job Dan! What made this special was the fact that the host had kept this in his cellar for almost 10 years. Very different compared to release...less citrus driven. Balances oxidative and reductive. Hardly any bubbles. Toasty, flint and nougat driven, but also honeyed and slightly caramelized.

Coming after the Charles Heidseick NV, with a 2008 Base wine, Disgorged in 2015, & 40% Reserve wines with an average age of 10’years, this was nothing more than simple.

This is slightly Pinot noir dominated. It is slightly tart yet also creamier. And toasty. It was like drinking a savory trifle. I’m not sure if that sounds appetizing but trust me, it worked!
